Comment:
Ogmundson is a scientist who understands that when it comes to the empirical nature of sociology, facts are facts, despite the opposite notion in the "normative sociological discourse". There is lots to be taken and gained from a class with this professor if ones mind is open to challenging their assumptions. sociology is such a political project.

Comment:
Ogmundson was on leave of absence for the first month of class. Not only did we have to switch to a new professor almost halfway through the semester, we switched to one who is outdated, unclear, unwilling to teach the subject (Modern Theory - unless 1960s readings are 'modern') and/or answer student questions without belittling the student. AVOID.

I'm deeply suspicious of all the positive comments on here...is Ogmundson writing these? Good test for grad school? Please, this is nothing but regurgitating bitter unlearned nonsense. He's proof of what's wrong with the tenure system.

Comment:
Ogmundson is great! It's so refreshing to go to his classes and actually hear something new! He definitely has high standards, but only in comparison to the 'no child left behind' nonsense that seems to go on in most other soci classes at UVic. A course with Ogmundson would probably be a good test for those students hoping to move on to grad school

Comment:
His attempts to be "contrarian" and challenge the status quo hide a bitter conservatism towards a discipline that left him behind. Assignments are just regurgitation. Readings are both obscure and dated. Thinks he knows what is best (More method! Data!) and hasn't learned anything in the past 40 years. Avoid if you want something stimulating

This class is mandatory to graduate with a Sociology major. 95% of this class had an extremely hard time passing this class. Averages were below C's. Class attendance is crucial since he does not post class notes online. His class lectures are messy and unclear. Even student adivsors recommended not taking this prof

He is a controversial professor, but I can say that he is one of advanced thinkers at UVic. Although I didn't like him at first, later on I could appreciate his sharp analytical view on social issues. One thing takers should remember is that not only taking notes carefully, but also reading all of assigned readings are crucial. Then, takers'll be fin

Great class in terms of challenging the status quo in soci. However, he does not tend to accept different opinions, and expects you to memorize his personal opinions for tests. Take very detailed notes, memorize his opinions exactly (word for word), and you will do well on tests. This class has three tests, one research project- no discussion mark.

Great professor, just be prepared to put in the work. Definitely possible to get a good grade if you put in the time and effort, go over everything from notes and course pack! He works hard at getting students to look at issues from different angles, and often plays the role of devils advocate as a way to arouse discussion and debate.

Dr. Ogmundson is a great prof! His lectures are always interesting, which is hard to achieve in a 3-hour class. Exams are tough, but completely doable for anyone who does the readings and takes good notes in class. I would definitely take a class with him again, and recommend him highly!

Comment:
What an opinionated reactionary. He's bitter and thinks it's his personal mission to enlighten "disillusioned" sociology studens who care. He does this under the guise of critical thinking but won't stand for any thinking that doesn't reflect his own views.'Oggies', should look at how they're upholding the status quo, not learning to challenge it.

Comment:
Dr. Ogmundson is by far the most forward-thinking professor at UVic. His classes are both challenging and engaging. Any student who is willing to attend class and stay on top of the readings can certainly attain an A. I suspect that many, if not all, of the naysayers on this page expected to breeze through this class with minimal effort. Surprise.

Comment:
He doesn't actually teach modern theory, just things he thinks are interesting. He hasn't considered or read much since he was a student in the 60s, and it shows. His so-called contrarian attitude belies a profound, willful, ignorance of anything going on in academia. Avoid at all costs, you won't learn anything of value. Hopefully retires soon.

2nd class Ive taken with Dr. O. He gives clear study guides for exams but gets a little carried away with choosing difficult questions that require sound knowledge of the readings. Be ready to really work hard on the final paper. If you can write a great final paper for him, he will reward you with a high final grade. Very interesting lectures!

I usually enjoy attending class but really struggled with this one. I found him to be not very helpful and thought the course material was very dry. He openly stated that most of his students get the same questions wrong every year... my comment is that maybe he should think about re-wording them so that we understand!!

I ace every one of my classes, I struggle to get by in his. The man is showing signs of senility, and is absolutely disagreeable as an evaluator?turning testing into a death-race rather than a constructive experience, valuing regurgitation over conceptualization.

This man teaches CNN and Fox News content, and I personally saw him scream (literally) at a student for criticizing the Bush administration. If Islamo-phobia, and relatively far-right politics are your bag, this is your man. Tests involve memorization and regurgitation of numerous odd lists, making this feel more like a biology class.

Although Professor Ogmundson's courses are often hard and sometimes a lesson in humility, I must say that he was one of the best professors that I had at UVic (I learned a lot). Unlike the previous poster I found Ogmundson calm, cool and collected while delivering his material. While studying for tests, pay specific attention to class notes.
