In all honesty, these reviews are going to scare you, as they did me last semester... But don't listen to them. Sabal is a helpful, funny guy who grades fair (And this is coming from someone who got a C+ in his class). People give him bad reviews because his class is not for the lazy, pretentious, or those who are not passionate about filmmaking.

Rob is a good guy. His teaching style is preachy, but he gets the point across. You learn about structure and expression as well as the technical side of things. He's willing to work with you if you're having problems with anything. Worst characteristic: getting up on a soap box when somethign is wrong. BUT, I would recommend him for film 1.

I don't know why he has such a poor rating, Rob's Film One class was great. I had to spend a lot of time on it, but he knows what he's talking about and will lend you extra help if you need it. His quizzes are hard, but that's about it. Great class.

Sabal is easily the best professor I've had in VMA: always good about offering guidance and advice, but also gives students enough creative leeway. Incredibly knowledgable and approachable, top-notch all around.

Rob is a great film teacher, he knows his stuff and is really willing to help. He expects you to work, but if you are a film major I don't know why you wouldn't for such an important class. Definitely recommend him.

I don't know why everyone's picking on Rob... he's nice, knowledgable, and helpful - if you ask for it. He does sort of skim over the specifics of how to use equipment etc, and he does have a tendency to be biased toward experimental work... but he's still a pretty good professor. Maybe it's different in MA202.

Unless you already have experience with programs such as Final Cut Pro you're not going to get much tutelage from him. Seemed like someone who tried too hard to be unique. Tried to be deep and have vision, but I never saw eye to eye with him, which makes me irrelevant. Sadly I feel that his class was a wasted resource and broke my enthusiam.

My interactions with Rob were on a BFA class and extracurricular advisory level and I didn't leave with the best impression of him. Nice out of class but in school - a little too wary and seemingly afraid of the system.

WEIRD!!!! Sort of nutty, made us watch all kinds of painful films, literally it hurt! He looks like butler from Rocky Horror Picture Show. I dreaded his class, BORING! He's in a different dimension then the rest of us.

Rob is a nice enough guy and is understanding if you have a problem, but his class is AWFUL! He doesn't teach anything, nor does he even attempt to explain his vague and weird assignments. He tells you lecture is optional, then gives you quizzes on the info! Do yourself a favor and skip this class!

The lecture had almost nothing to do with the Lab. The lectures consisted of Sabal showing us films and discussing them. Lab should have spent more LEARNING THE PROGRAMS rather than LOOKING AT PROJECTS FROM CLASSMATES. I spent 22 hrs editing my final.. help during lab time would have been nice.
