Adequate teacher, insufferable adviser. Constantly tried to coerce me into taking classes that I had no interest in and keep me from taking courses relevant to my major. Was too preoccupied with me taking 2 honors classes every semester, despite me sometimes having 20+ hours of other courses and already having honors program reqs. fulfilled.

Advice to students: if you are not interested in philosophy, moral issues, literature theory, basically "the liberal arts", don't take Dr. Baker. He's a fascinating person if you are interested in the humanities, which I was, but if you are not willing to think and take his positions into account, you won't like this class. You do have to show up.

Comment:

Gets on some students nerves because he doesn't allow answers that aren't well thought out or don't follow logic, but really is trying to be helpful by forcing a more careful consideration. Very nice and doesn't ask more than the 1 CH the course is worth. Enjoyable!

The class asks students to analyze and discuss various works with their fellow students.However, Dr. Baker doesn't allow this. He preaches about being open to other views but he is a hypocrite.He doesn't let students express themselves unless it compliments the point he is trying to make.'Discussions' are too structured to be effective.

Emphasizes analytical thinking every class period. This may seem annoying at first, but you will realize the benefits of it. There is either a small paper or reading assignment every week, but is not hard at all. As an advisor, he will go out of his way to help you. Oh, and two words: Bow ties. You will see what I mean.

Dr. Baker is a nice guy and really cares about what he is talking about. Class is very interesting. However he grades hard and at times unfairly, I worked hard on my WEEKLY papers and couldn't get anything above a C. I had friends in that class who would get A's, they would help me but still just C's. Test are hard as well.

In class, Dr. Baker is great professor and promotes his students to discuss their interpretations, although he does sometimes filter out poor thoughts with some designated attack dogs, pet students who think critically about others ideas and the readings. As long as you do the readings, writings, talk, and think, you'll ace this first honors class.

Dr. Baker is WONDERFUL! He is very insightful. He expects you to complete the assigned readings and papers, but considering the class is the honors seminar that shouldn't be a problem. He's very helpful both in and outside of academics. He loves to have discussions, and really expects his students (at least in the honors seminar) to think. :)
