Comment:
It's pretty much just him lecturing at you for the whole class which can get kind of boring. He's extremely knowledgable about the subject and he knows a lot of things, but the class can get dull at points. He gave 3 papers and 1 final, each of which was 20-30% of the grade. You can get by without doing some of the readings, but take notes

doesn't understand how to teach anthropology. NOT a discussion based class-he will lecture at you for 55 minutes and you will leave with nothing. i cannot emphasize enough how bad this class was. nice guy, bad professor.

Very passionate about what he's teaching, but you have to meet him half way. Quality of the class entirely depends upon what you want to get out of it. Very few writing assignments, just a lot of reading that he reviews each class.

Comment:
Kemper has a lot to say but often goes off on tangents. He also thinks he knows a lot about Asian cultures as did his dissertation on Sri Lanka but doesn't know what the current capital is. Overall not the most inspiring class but what you get out of it is contingent on how engaged you are in class.

Not informative. Narrow-minded. Made generalizations about cultures that were harmful to the material. I didn't learn a thing. Eventually stopped going to class because it was frustrating and a huge waste of time. Worst class I've taken.

This professor is extremely boring. He has some useful information, mind you, its not very insightful, or plentiful. However, he conveys this information very poorly. All in all, avoid his classes, unless you hate yourself.

I don't care what everyone else says - I love Kemper. He takes a little getting used to, but if you actually keep up with your reading, pay attention and participate in his classes, they can be a lot of fun. He does go off on tangents once in a while, but at least they are interesting. Also, articipate if you want a better grade in his class.

Kemper is everything you want in a professor-an expert in his field, a solid lecturer, and available for those students who take themselves seriously. If you want an easy and boring college experience, save your money and go to community college.

I disagree with everything bad that has been said. Kemper is one of my favorite Bates profs. Very smart and aware of the intricacies in the subject matter. A realist, and very funny. If he was rude to you it's probably because you're dumb.
