Vance is a very nice and intelligent professor. I took his class freshman year and struggled in his class. He expect too much from student and obviously I am not a philosopher. He is also definitely a tough grader. If you like to be challenge, take him.

Extremely condescending. Tries to come off as nice and reasonable but is sharply critical if you happen to disagree with him.

Comment:
Vance was the entire reason I became a philosophy major; I hadn't even considered the subject before taking my first class with him. He not only pushed me to think deeper about society and existence, but helped me realize why deep critical thinking was a necessary precursor to social change. I wouldn't be where I am today without him.

Comment:
Vance seems to be a nice guy who is highly intelligent but he doesn't know how to pass on his knowledge. He canceled class without warning and then assigns work when it is convenient for him. He teaches ethics like his students are familiar with ethics. Vance doesn't know how to provide his students with a meaningful learning experience.

Really good teacher, but as a student you have to be interested in Philosophy to enjoy the class. He really wants students to reach their potential so definitely ask him for help if you are confused! And do the reading before class because he will know!

I adore Vance. He is an enigma in class discussions and his grading especially on papers was very tough but I loved both classes I took with him and always felt like I could come talk to him even when he was no longer my advisor (he taught my FYE) or my professor. Classes were almost 100% discussion-based which is fairly typical for Guilford.

Comment:
Vance was cool. He was well-educated and articulate. I just did not find his course interesting or engaging, though I wouldn't call it hard. It wasn't particularly easy either. He got a remarkable part of the class to participate over the semester. Overall, I would hang out with Vance, but I found his ethics class obvious and boring.

Lots of writting and tons of work for a 100 level course. He is also very tough grader on the papers.I will never take another class like this one! First and last. :(

I had Vance years ago, but I still remember him as one of my best professors. Quite a tough grader and doesn't have patience for a lot of BS, but also one of the smartest and kindest teachers I've ever had. Teaches very challenging subjects in a clear way and will always challenge you to think and write your very best!

Vance is one of the best professors I have experienced. He's not easy, so don't take his classes if you expect an A without any work. If you want to laugh, have fun, learn, and work to your full potential, take a class with Vance. You won't regret it.

Vance is a fantastic teacher. Unfortunately, a lot of people unused to thinking take this intro course and just never apply themselves, it's very obvious who hasn't done hte readings and can't discuss things in class, and I'm sure their papers were the same. It was hard, but fun and rewarding for me. And his furrowed bald head is STRIKING!

Horrible teacher, biased, has very clear definitions that do not mirror the rest of reality. Pretty much he has his own theory for everything, and do not disagree. He'll just be passive aggressive. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES.

Very biased. If you do not live inside Vance's head, you will fall flat on your face in essays. He has a very specific way he wants you to write, but he never gives examples of good writing. Way too difficult for a 100 class. I don't suggest taking this, unless you are a philosophy major!

Comment:
Disappointing. Always have done well in philosophy; course virtually all writing. Assignments very nebulous. No ruberic or framework for assignment requirements. Difficulty not in course content by 'finding what it is he wants.' Wanton criticism does not buttress the course- it is just a chance to show off power of professorship

Too much work for a 100-level class. Very intelligent, but expects too much from a mostly non-philosophy major audience.
