Comment:
DO NOT TAKE Irons is the worst professor I've ever had, he gives ridiculous amounts of readings and papers to the point that I would have a panic attack every other night. Listen to these reviews, don't take any class by him.

Where is there to start with him? He seems nice but shows bias very quickly to kids that fit his "agenda". He hands out papers like there is no tommorow and calls you out in the middle of class for just about anything. A airhead who talks about one issue for a whole semster while rambling on about subjects which are irrelevant to the subject. AVOID

This is hands down one of the hardest professors at Elon, however he is also one of the greatest professors as well. Irons makes his students work hard for their grades, if an easy "A" is all you care about do not take his classes. Despite this, Irons has an intense passion for his subject and this made his class amazing.

Despite the Surplus of Negative Reviews, Charles Irons was a fantastic teacher. He is passionate about his subject and requires the same of his students. If you don't like history and you want an "easy A" this is not the class for you. Around 60% of my class dropped before the midterm, but those who remained were in for a treat! Awesome! A++

Really a strange individual, he is very positive, but he also rants about one thing that occurs in class at the beginning of the semester for the entire semester. He makes big deals out of small things, and is obsessed with sticking to the syllabus in a non-academic class.

DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Overall he seems like a nice guy, but his grading is ridiculous. He expects the best out of all of his students and his expectations are very high. We read about 30 different historic articles that we had to memorize for the midterm and the final which was really difficult. Find a different history teacher.

Irons seems like a very smart and kind man, but he taught this 100 level course like we were all aspiring historians. Every day consisted of "analyzing" obscure and perplexing primary sources, and listening to him scold us all for not discussing them. Looking for Intro US history (something I truly looked forward to taking)? This is not this class.

DO NOT TAKE THIS He makes you memorize primary sources and for a 100 level class, it is INSANELY difficult. I have a 3.7 GPA at Elon, and if I did not drop his class, I probably would have either failed, or gotten a D. He assigns 3 essays each on a new book and grades them really hard. Also, the tests are damn near IMPOSSIBLE.

If you don't love history and are just trying to complete a civilization requirement: DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. I do not like history, and I literally put so much effort in this class to probably end up with a low C or high D. Papers are tough, tests were hard. If you are a history majorminor, I know some who have liked this class, but I did not.

He will constantly want to meet with you but will only tell you everything you're doing wrong and will not help you to fix it. He is typically very nice, but is extremely difficult. I would avoid his class at all cost if possible.

Hardest professor I've ever taken. Super nice guy, but he is too smart and expects you to be as smart as he is. He's a great professor and really passionate. But if you want an A or even a B. You better be ready to spend at least 6 hours a day on his homework. And he grades even harder.

Honestly it was a great class. I hate history and it was a lot of work (about half the class dropped) but you can tell irons is really excited about the class. If you do the work, you will be fine!

Terrible professor. Teaches a completely warped sense of US history. I only took this class b/c it was required for a history minor. I've had enough upper level history classes to know poor teaching when I see it. He is a horrid professor and is always condescending, probably b/c it's a freshman class.Avoid at all costs! Horrible horrible professor

If you like history, go for an Irons class. If not, run. The workload was impossibly large, even for an honors class. His guidelines were a mystery until the assignment was already graded. And if you have trouble memorizing every minute detail of history, you will be left behind. It isn't worth the stress and frustration.

Yes, you have to work really hard in this class, but it's an honors class and that is expected. Professor Irons pushes us really hard and even though it seems unreasonable and most times unwelcome, in retrospect, it is very much appreciated. I've learned so much in the class about the topic and just general skills that I know will be helpful later.

Irons is a great guy who is very enthusiastic about his work. That being said, he gets a bit too enthusiastic and pushes his students far past their skill levels. While he is always available to help his students, it doesn't help much if the amount of information/expectation of the students is too high. Avoid this class if you can.

Irons is an excellent teacher and fun to listen to in class. However, his class is very, VERY DIFFICULT. Be prepared to work possibly harder than you ever have in your entire life in order to get a B or C. Your intelligence level and GPA will never be the same.
