Excellent teacher..well versed..extremely knowledgeable about any subject he teaches. I have learned a lot. I would advise anyone who is interested in majoring in Black Studies to either take on of his classes or read one of his books. Really enjoyed his classes and his presentation for the classes.

Wonderful professor. Probably one of the smartest and most intelligent people I have ever met. You learn so much from him just by talking to him in normal conversation. Class was a lot of work, but really made me a better writer. I would really recommend him as a professor, not just for this course!

Dr. Semmes is a walking encyclopedia on the subject. He's to the point and cares about his students' academic success. Lectures are very informative, try not to miss them. I highly recommend this course and instructor.

Hard but Fun. Don't miss out because he challenges you. He is worth it and it is possible to get an A. He knows his stuff and he is going to make sure that by the time you leave his class you know it too! If you would like to be able to articulate the issues in the Black community this is the class for you.

Very good class and a very good Professor. Dr. Semmes personal experiences and his invaluable knowledge in his field is remarkable. Tests usually have 20 multiple choice and the rest are true/false questions. I wrote a Book review (no more than 5 pages) and Journal review (no more than 3 p)for his class. I attended during Spring 2006 semester.

Simply put, Clovis Semmes is in my opinion the best professor at EMU. However, if you are looking for an easy class, DO NOT take his classes. Dr. Semmes pushes his students to excel and will be there with you every step of the way. Great professor!

Dr. Semmes is a true intellectual. His theory on Cultural Hegemony is phenomenal. Though what he talks about is heavy, he helps you to understand. Student uccess and understanding appears to be his priority.
