Dr. Elder is a great teacher, as well as my adviser. Attendance isn't mandatory, but most of the test content comes from his lectures. The book is more of a study reference than anything else. If you come up with a good argument about an answer on the test, he will usually throw at least a 5 point curve your way.

Really good teacher. Easy to work with. Tests are really, really hard. Attendance is not required but recommended. If you miss class it doesn't hurt too bad, but makes studying more tests much more difficult. Very good teacher overall.
