Professor Esselstrom is a kind soul who cares about his students. The class is workshop based, which can confuse some at times, however it is because Professor Esselstrom expects his students to have certain levels of self sufficiency. He gives you the opportunity to ask him about his life and share wisdom. A fun class.

Professor Esselstrom was an amazing and inspiring teacher. This was his last semester teaching and it made me appreciate what he taught even more. I will miss his funny jokes and life advice. I learned more about life than literature but it was still an enjoyable class.

Dr. Esselstrom goes on tangents all the time. He will answer virtually any question you ask him without a filter, which makes his class fun and personal. Everyone feels welcome and I walked out of that class feeling refreshed in my knowledge of literature and various other subjects. This class was more of a study hall, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Dr. Esselstrom is possibly one of my favorite professors ever. His lectures are fantastic and he is incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. I really enjoyed his class. The tests and somewhat easy and there are just 2 papers/presentations.

Dr. E is the best! Amazing the people he knows. You may feel like his lectures have nothing to do with the class... but believe me come test time its all in there very practical information. Take good notes. Great prof teaches about more than ENGL... life, religion, philosophy, film, and writing. He is truly amazing and incredibly sharp.

Incredibly dry sense of humor shot through with weird musings about the meaning of existence and reality. If you're an English major you'll love it, he's definitely that kind of character.

Dr. Esselstrom cares about who you are and somewhere along the line English ties in. He focuses more on how your mind works and how you apply things. He puts in a lot of effort and expects you to do the same with is challenging but rewarding in the end.

Dr. E is fantastic! Just know your vocab, he's quite profound and is soooo intelligent! Honestly, I walked away from this class with more knowledge about phil., history, & religion than english, persay, but the readings are amazing, & he is really understanding. Get to know him & you'll see that it is all very worth it!

Dr. Esselstrom is very hard to explain. Although on a daily basis I left his class frustrated because I didn't feel like I was learning anything I got more out of his class than any of my others this semester. Dr. Esselstrom may seem boring and tedious but his lectures are utterly transformational. You may not learn lit but you learn LIFE!

Do not take class with him. Yes, you can slack in the reading, but when the test comes around you will TOTALLY regret taking him. I am an English major and am now thinking I want to switch majors. He knows a lot of practical stuff that you can't be tested on and then tests on things you never even mentioned in class. awesome personality, not style

This man is a GENIUS. Although there isn't much "academic" learning in his class, his reflections and advice he often fills periods with are invaluable. I wish I used a tape recorder and saved all of his imparted wisdom. Nice man too.

I looked at the other comments and took him and I regreted it every class. He is a perfect example of how college education is failing to educate students. Take this class if you want to spend an hour laughing at his nerdy, not-funny jokes. If you care about learning at all, stay away. I wanted to take this class but it was a great disappointment.

he's an incredible teacher. the class is only hard if you cannot appreciate his intellect and wit... or if you never go, or if you hate shakespeare, but you shouldnt take the class if thats the case. his lectures are always interesting. great class.great professor.

He requires reading about one play every two weeks, writing three 6 page papers, a midterm, and a final. Didn't neccessarily learn as much as I would have liked because classes usually consisted of Esselstrom having discussions about anything but shakespeare which was ok because he was interesting, amusing in his own academic way

He's a nice guy, and smart, but he only tells you what he expected from you *after* you turn in the 9 page paper. Class is fun, a lot of banter if you have a good group, not much educational-talk happening.

Very good prof. Talks a lot and gives us big writing projects, but fair in grading and very helpful. Prompts for writing are sometimes given orally, so it can be confusing at times. Some grammar...really wants his students to be successful.

Awesome. He really wants to help his students become better writers. Be ready to write several papers (most are short. He is fair in grading and is actually really easy if you follow instructions. Lets you come up with own topic sometimes. Take him, you won't regret it! Best prof I've had at APU!!!
