I cannot give Dr. Davies enough high praise. I walked into his class with only one year of Greek under my beltand after his first class, I went home crying, thinking Id never pass. But he took me, with virtually no understanding of Greek grammar I failed the first two testsand molded me into an A student. Im forever grateful to him.

Comment:
Dr. Davies is a fantastic professor -- his insights into the epics (Illiad/Odyssey/Aeneid) are mind-boggling. He is a tough grader, but gives detailed feedback on the essays. Only gives reading quizzes if class discussion -- which is the way he teaches -- is poor. He prefers to guide his students to insights. Make sure to back up claims you make.

Davies is nice and is always helpful when doing in class translations. He doesn't assign homework in CLG2311 so you have to be willing to do your own study outside of class. He grades fairly and is very competent. Overall a solid teacher.

I took Lit Trad and Latin with Davies, and he is an extraordinarily good prof. He will go out his way to help you, and he truly loves his subjects. He demands a lot from you, but will teach you to meet his standards.

Comment:
He is extremely pretentious and has a very large ego. Doesn't really attempt to help or guide students, just speaks on what he wants to talk about it. Disrespectful if struggling to understand assignments and is willing to put you down in front of class. Not supportive of athletes. Thinks his class is the only one that you are taking.

Only take this professor if you're already very good at analyzing a text and coming up with new ideas. He's not very helpful in the "Let us learn how to do English" department. He concenrates on the text.... which is fine if you already know what you're doing, but....

Classes are practically entirely discussion, and consequently, participation is important. He's a tough but helpful grade on essays. Very enthusiastic, and maintains a very relaxed, often humorous tone in class. Still, I feel like I didn't learn as much because I personally learn more from lectures.

AMAZING! Only thing I can say. You cannot imagine how much his class was a breath of fresh air. In High School I had one of the worst Greek teachers ever, spent two months on contract verbs, went here, and he taught them in a day. What does "Turtles all the way down" mean?

I had Davies for both Lit Trad and Greek my first semester and I loved him. He really knows the text, and his Lit classes are completely discussion. He's easy to work with and is a fair grader. I HIGHLY recommend him.

Dr. Davies' Lit Trad class was the highlight of my semester. The class is almost entirely discussion. Though he guides the discussion where he wants, he always get the students to think up the points he would want to make on their own. He is a tough but fair grader, and if you go and talk to him about your papers, he will make you a better writer.

Comment:
In a night grad class on tragedy/comedy, Dr. Davies was longwinded--every class ran over time--& unprofessional--he insulted colleagues by name, behind their backs. The final resrch papers he didn't even mark up; instead, he gave a short paragraph of comments *full of spelling errors* (he is the Chair of the Eng Dept.?!). Poor form!
