Comment:
I have never had a professor this awful. Pompous, self-important, inaccessible, and unclear in his instructions. He is incapable of giving positive feedback. Want to spend hours reading obscure philosophy that doesn't relate to anything, and then be told you didn't do it right, based on a secret rubric which is never explained? Step right up...

Avoid at any cost, especially if English is not your first language. He demands same level from all students and claims that going to the writing center is plagiarizing, which is exactly what everyone else encourages doing. He only speaks about his own research, unrelated to course material. Very traditional method as only he speaks in class.

Comment:
Professor Castle had no application of theory in his theory class! It was so heavy on learning obscure, hard to explain theories and no attempt to show what these theories might look like in the real work application. His feedback was arbitrary and not at all in response to content. Only to style. Avoid this class.

Ive never rated a professor, but, after what has been the worst academic experience of my life, I must. Be prepared for your current assignment to be due before you get feedback from your last one. Be prepared for that feedback to be inconsistent. And be prepared to never be able to please him. Id rather be mauled by a bear than do this again.

Ive never rated a professor before. However, in all of my years in undergrad and grad, I never really met someone who comes off so arrogant and inflexible. His grading is inconsistent and harsh unless, of course, your interests are the same as his. His feedback is thorough, but it is not always helpfulcoming off abrasive and confusing instead.

Comment:
Gregory Theodore Castle III (I'm guessing about his middle name and the "III" because that is how pompous he is). Tries to relate everything to Irish Studies. Voices his opinion as fact and dismisses anyone that doesn't share his opinion. Makes you purchase exact edition of books "to make sure someone makes money." Bullies quiet students, a lot.

Comment:
Confusing, overwhelming, unclear, unhelpful, rude, arrogant, self-absorbed. These are just a few words of many that describe Castle. Every class he pontificated about about his own random interestsopinions. Castle is so absorbed in his own, in the box, way of thinking that he sees anything different as wrong. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!

Comment:
Rude to students, cuts students off, tells them they are wrong in matters of opinion. Relates everything to obscure Irish poetry and is offended if you don't immediately recognize it. I almost filed a sexual harassment complaint against him, too. Avoid at all costs, especially if you identify as female. 010, would not recommend to my worst enemy.

Arrogant, self-absorbed, pompous, and woefully unhelpful. Worst class at ASU (and I have taken lots). Avoid. Run. Really.

really, really bad. dr. castle spends the whole class giving speeches about his own interests, which consist of weird irish history and feeling like an important scholar. (he isn't.) 0/10 do not take.

I found his lectures confusing half the time he'd go on about things that werent even in the book! I'm dying studying for the final for his class and it's open book he's the hardest professor I've ever had and I'm a sophomore maybe it's the material in this class or something, but I wouldnt recommend taking a class taught by him

I ignored the reviews thinking they were freshmen complaining, but as a senior it would be nothing new. At first it was demanding but doable. But his paper grading policy is insane! He doesn't follow his own scale. One mistake and you've lost your A. Two and you've lost your B. This scale even applies to your rough draft which is 5% of your grade!

Professor Castle is one who will keep you on your toes at all times. He expected everyone to be keeping up with the homework and to participate. He was often confrontational, opinionated, and merciless, yet I learned more from his class then almost any other. Tip: use a dictionary for the readings, he likes to grill students on word definitions.

I, along with my discussion section, was explicitly told by my TA to not contact or ask this professor for help. And that his educational pedagogy is that he bestows his superior knowledge to students. If you believe education should be a mutual discourse, do not take this professor's class.

This guy's email signature, a quote from Wilde, says it all: "Stupidity is the only sin." Lectures are interesting, books are good, but if you need any help, think again. He's quick to judge. If he thinks youre dumb he's rude, impatient and unkind. Great lecturer, horrible teacher. Cant relate to young audience thinks class is a conference talk

From my experience, the standards in this class are completely fair, and the grading is in by no means harsh. Yes, you have to attend class. Yes, it is definitely helpful to do the assigned readings beforehand. Maybe the other comments are from students more suited for community college or trade school.

Take this class if you enjoy a) obscure references to Irish things, b) intensive attention to Irish literature and not much else, c) pompous over-educated windbag professors, or d) sleepy time. If any or all of these things appeal to you, you will probably love this class. If not, take Boyer. He is awesome.

I was looking very forward to this class and I was highly disappointed. I didn't learn anything. Everybody in my class was receiving bad grades with no useful feedback so we continued to suffer. I feel like I worked too hard for the grade I received. Towards the end I gave up because I felt like it didn't matter. I feel like it was a waste of time.

I took a special topics with this professor that covered Literary Theory and went through pretty much every theory in the books. He is obsessed with using his own book and says its a summary but to be honest, he is a very difficult teacher. My parents even looked over the material and said it was super hard. Great professor and teaching skills but
