Do NOT take this if you want an easy 111 class!! You must attend everyday and write down EVERYTHING he says in class. Tests/quizzes happen almost everyday and are on the most remote details ever!!! Terrible teacher!! Notes are not online & you don't use a book. This might be the first 111 I'll fail & I go to class every day!! Ridiculous.

Dr. Swagler made learning about jazz history very very interesting. His class is fun with all the jokes and stories he tells. He does a great job of explaining the topic and giving examples. The notes are easy to take, he tells you what is on the exams, and the exams come right from the notes. All memorization. TAKE HIM!

Probably the worst teacher I have had at SIUE. I hated that class, you study stupid music and was a complete waste of my time. You are required to go to really lame concerts. When he tests you he tests you over the littlest details that shouldn't matter. If I were you I wouldn't ever take this class with him.

Ouch, as a music major, that last comment hurt. You don't have to like wind band music, but we enjoy it and I like to think it's better than "mediocre" perhaps I'm wrong. And as far as Jason, I loved him as a teacher. Easy to understand, and easy class.

Complete waste of a class. This guy tries to jam way too much into a class that is only supposed to be a 100 level class. If you are looking for an easy class, DON'T take this one unless you want to study worthless music for hours and go to atleast 3 mandatory mediocre music concerts (the only way they can make people show up to them) BEWARE!!!!!!!

I loved him! he was an awesome teacher. The subject matter was straight forward, but you have to STUDY. listening tests are not passible unless you study. I made that mistake and got a C on one test... even though i got A's on everything else i ruined my grade. Awesome sax player!!

He's a pretty good teacher. I'm not a music major or anything and I completely understood what was going on. Tests are easy. Only thing that was bad were the movies we watched...pretty boring, but he's a good guy and a good teacher!

Had him early in his days at SIUE. Fun guy. Understanding of the pitch thing. Wasn't very good at teaching the whole listening and figuring out the note thing. Funny guy. Class was fun for those who knew music theory coming into the class, but ear tuning (or whatever it's called) was super hard for all. Singing in class was fun. :)Awesome musician!

He is a cool professor, he does not expect people to have perfect pitch. He is understanding and has really cool stories to share with people. Occasionally he goes off on tangents but they are funny ones. Go see him play if you can he is awesome!
