Doctor Charpie has always been one of my favorite teachers at SCSU. If you aren't ready to work hard do not take the class. You will benefit greatly as a researcher and a thinker. The class is very subjective and he will work with anything you say. One on one personal communication and email are important. Paper grades don't reflect final grade.

Dr. Charpie is a great teacher. He was intimidating at first, since he has very high expectations, but his class turned out to be my favorite. He requires a lot of work, but it is an honors class and he is beyond willing to help. I got so much out of the course and it was very rewarding. One of the best professors at SCSU

Dr. Charpie is a great man who is willing to help all who want to learn. You must accustom yourself with his teaching style in order to actually understand what he is trying to teach. Although he may seem intimidating, Charpie cares about his students struggles. Be prepared to work hard, but give Dr. Charpie a chance and he will be your best friend

Professor Charpie is an amazing professor who really cares about having his students become lifelong learners and scholars. While intimidating during the first session, Dr. Charpie is truly someone who wants to see his students succeed. He is very easy to talk to inside and outside of the classroom and he is extremely helpful with all questions.

Professor Charpie is a rare type of educator that actually cares about instilling knowledge upon students in his class. I had him for Honors 280 during my Freshman year and, while I received a B+ as a final grade, I can honestly say that I enjoyed his class thoroughly and learned how to be a much more proficient writer. Working hard does pay off.

Charpie is the Tim Tebow of the Honors College falculty. A whole lot of unfounded hype, and in times when someone truly good in his field would shine, he falls miserably short. He is unparalleled at making you feel inferior, even if you are trying. Had a casual conversation with him once, he talked all about himself and made fun of me.

He helps those only who he deems "worthy." People who have different (but valid) views or lifestyles will be cast aside. He has a pathetically comical ego complex. He's nothing special.

Great teacher if you are willing to learn. Teaches differently but you learn a lot. Gives a ton of work that seems pointless, but then it all clicks and you understand why he gave it to you. Always willing to give extra help! Learned so so so much in this class.

Comment:
Although Charpie thinks he is far too enlightened to learn from other people--his job now, of course, is just to guide them or belittle them from his superior plain--he should return to earth and befriend Mark Heidmann, so that he can learn what actual teaching and guiding is. Oh, and humility.

Dr. Charpie is a very nice man and will give you a ton of extra help if you need it. His class is quite difficult, but show up with an eager mind and a positive attitude and you should do just fine. He generally gives a very large workload, so only take his class if you feel like you will have time to do a lot of homework.

Overall a terrible professor. First half the semester he loaded us with work, and the second half he barely taught anything and we didn't have any assignments besides the final.

Instead of telling students to "write prodigiously," John Charpie should "prodigiously" study the pedagogy of Mark Heidmann, so that he can learn to teach. Oh, and Burma doesn't exist anymore. Yup. I said it.

An egotist with an inflated sense of self--thought he hidies it well. He believes he is some benefactor to humanity and that, therefore, he is above it. If you don't challenge him, and if you are "awed" by him and his teaching--automatic A. If you do not think he is God-on-Earth, or are not wowed by him in some regard, perpare for an awful time.

The worst professor on the entire planet. Hard, rude, disrespectful to students and doesn't know what "teaching" means. He will make you feel stupid and you will struggle for a C in the class (let alone an A or B)...yuck- so happy this class is over. DO NOT TAKE!

Dr. Charpie is an extremely smart man, but his expectations are way too high for students who are new to a certain subject. He has very strict guidelines for formatting assignments, and that alone can wreck your grade. He is also pretty intimidating if you meet with him, but he is willing to meet with students for any reason. He's a good professor.

I took This class during the summer session, and let me say, he did not hide that fact that he did not want to be there. Several people complained throughout the course that he would never respond to emails. Made the problems so much more complicated than they needed to be. He has a short temper, and is quite useless for extra help.
