TOUGH professor. Started off with 26 students - by the end of the semester, down to 15 or so. MUST read book and take good notes in class. I found it much easier to type while he lectured instead of trying to write stuff down, so I brought my laptop. Pay attention to what you might consider an obscure or offhand remark - it'll be on the test!

Delivery style is pure lecture. John, enthusiastic about the subject, constantly bounces around topics. Often he would hit the class with a series of names, dates, and locations, continuing on without allowing adequate time for those taking notes. The class was full (20+) but almost everyone dropped.

WAAAAYY too hard! I am a straight A student who got a D and had to withdraw from the class. Excellent class for potential history majors who like a good challenge! Take anything you can from Dennis Kellogg! Keeps things interesting

very hard course. he expects you to know everything. grades tests on curve though, but still the highest grade you can get is a B+. you will learn so much useless stuff about iowa. seriously hard class takes up way to much time!

Knows very well what the facts are, expects students to do a lot of reading outside of class but is a fair grader and appreciates effort.

Probably one of the most difficult classes i took in college (and i now have a Master's degree). His was the only class that i earned less than a B in (i got a C), but also one of the classes i learned the most in. Challenging. Worth every dime.

Very challenging class. Excited and thoroughly knowledgeable about topic. Very tough exams. Mostly, the class is straight lecture. I wish he didn't talk down to us. Could be much more clear about what he is looking for in the research paper? I wish their more things like presentations and group projects so we could learn from each other.

Subject to subject all the time. This guy is hard to follow. However he is pretty helpful. Also, he pays too much attention to things that do not matter. Example: Instead of asking to map "Wounded Knee" on the map, he asked us to map "Hotchkis Guns". I think one out of 30 in class got it.

Re-goddamn-diculous. You better be able to give a definition for every term and a date from the book, and read a whole nother book, to get even a C in this class. He jumps around subjects and once used the word 'obviously' 73 times in one class period.
