Although this professor is passionate about what he teaches, if you do not have a background in programming this course will be difficult. He expects you to know the material without fully teaching it which can be frustrating to many like myself. He does say that the class will be curved but keep in mind it is almost unnoticeable.

Longtin is a no nonsense kind of guy. Don't talk in his class, don't give him sass, and make sure you come every time. I wish he allowed laptops in class so you can try out the code as he talks about it but as he says, the best thing you can do is play around with MATLAB.

He is the best professor in my major. You don't wanna miss his class because its so helpful and important. But his exams are tough, and he is very strict is the class. You will be kicked out if you chart with your friend. Anyway, my classmates all love him.

He's the best professor I've had so far! I would definitely recommend him! He's hilarious and keeps the class interesting. You can't blame him for the class being hard.

Great Professor and all around great guy. Knows how to convey knowledge in an interesting way. Full of personality and makes quips at some of the quips in the class. Can throw down if you speak up. May be bipolar, but is the best professor you can hope to get. Only major drawback is that it's obvious MatLab is not his forte and he grades tough

One of the best professors I've had at Stony Brook. He's great at teaching, and he's interesting to listen to. His exams really make you think, but they're not unreasonable. Know the material, and you'll do fine.

Longtin is such a great professor b/c he remembers what it is like to be a student. He assumes we are all idiots and explains everything instead of assuming you are already an expert on thermo. Strives to show you the practical side of engineering. Only hard thing is the exams are way more challenging than anything you'll see in the HW / lecture.

Great professor, but a Difficult course. Everything here revolves around Matlab, and he makes you Know this program. Homeworks and project assigned makes you think, and Midterm and Finals are even more difficult. He'll go slow in lecture and is very helpful in office hours, but be prepared to learn a lot!

Very nice guy, goes nice and slow. If you have no past programming experience like myself then be prepared to spend hours on the homeworks and projects. He only does simple examples that anyone could do, then the questions in the book come for HW and you end up staring at it for hours and testing on MatLab. If you spend the time you will do fine

Very nice guy. Very helpful at office hours also. The class can be challenging, but also becomes very interesting. The final is weighted so heavy it screwed my grade up. He throws in linear algebra which turned out to be 1/4 of the final, even though it's not in the course description. Oh well.

Professor Longtin is great. He is very clear and very helpful during office hours. He is very professional and cares about what you want to say. On the other hand, if you take MEC 102 without previous programming experience (just like me), you will find it a bit challenging. This class is tough and exams are not easy at all. Be prepare!!

At first it's a pretty interesting class. Seems like he actually cares about his students, unlike most profs. Helpful and friendly during office hours. However, if you have no programming experience this class will be tough, and the exams are pretty hard too. Textbook isn't really helpful either. Sometimes gives test questions in class.

Overall a good insturctor. He helps students as best as he can. Unfortunately, tests do not accurately cover what was in the homework. In fact, tests are WAY harder than what you study for. Expect nasty engineering problems for tests.

One of the best Professors in the MEC department. He instructs his class as an engineer, instead of a just a lecturer. In thermo. always gave real world perspectives or examples, of how relative concepts can be applied. Plus, I love the way he always uses slang phrases from the 80s. lol.

oh boy, I can't image why he never tried out to be an english professor b/c he's so good at blabbing about engineering, i feel sorry about what I've learn in MEC 101. He'll make your experience in engineering enjoyable. His HWs are fair and his test are all on his class notes and the book. You might not even fall asleep in the class b/c it's not as bad as people think. i would recommend him...hands down.
