This class was very time-consuming, but I learned a lot. Kent is very helpful when you ask, but sometimes his comments can be snarky, bordering on a bit mean (but not necessarily untrue.) If you work hard, and keep up, you'll do fine.

Comment:

First off, Does not accept any late work even if you tell him your going to be out of town or if you had a emergency. Grading curve is so bad that it is almost impossible to achieve a full score in every thing (Field Journals, Quizzes). I dedicate a whole day for this class and still find it hard to pass with at least a C

bad teacher. you can get a good grade if you are always online but if you don't check in every other day, turning your work in on time will result in a bad grade still. I learned nothing except that if i didn't love graphic design so much i'd never do it again

If you're a strong writer, this class is time consuming, but not difficult to get an 'A' in. If you're not a strong writer, take as many English classes as you can, prior to the course, and take it during a light quarter. If you're doing well, he doesn't want you to interact with him, so he can focus on the struggling students.

Comment:

Kent Manske is a national treasure, and Foothill College is lucky to have him. He truly cares about his students, yet has little patience for slackers- a good trait in a Community College Setting. He has immense experience in the graphic design world and imparts this knowledge freely. If you can take an in-person class with him, all the better.

Amazingly dedicated teacher. He inspires students to work very hard, and he works even harder than they do to help them learn. He is smart, communicates very well, and is very respectful of students. Wonderful teacher.

Creative, compassionate and an enthusiastic instructor. Really a super nice guy that offers an in depth exploration of the subject and one's personal style. On the other hand don't be a slacker, he has no sympathy for you. He is always there to help.

Great Professor! He really cares about the students' learning and makes you think and work hard, but you'll want to. Don't take him if you want an easy A, want to do sloppy work or not care, miss lots of classes and then turn in late work. This pisses him off. If you turn work in on time, he'll let you revise it until its an A.

Everyone's saying he's so hard and that it's impossible to get an "A" -not true. He's a GREAT teacher. I took his online class and there was a ton of reading (2-3 chapters), a journal (basically an essay), and test (mult choice & essay) every week. He offers a ton of extra credit too. Follow his guidelines and read the chapters and you'll get an A.

I had to turn in a few assignments for his class late due to illness. When I tried to explain (even though I tried to tell him I accepted any late penalty), he wouldn't listen to me and made me cry. Would not take his class again.

He grades so hard for his online class, its ridiculous, I haven't gotten one A on any of my journals... If you take his online history of graphic design class, prepare to designate 4-5 hours doing the test on boring topics. Oh and the textbook....has no glossary and none of the important. the textbook is very unhelpful. Do not take this class.

Comment:

It's rare to find an instructor so dedicated to his department. The long hours he spends beyond his teaching time in the lab and all the time and effort he spends to procure, repair and maintain used presses and equipment, are what makes this department above and beyond any other at a Junior College level or beyond. Truly a rare & great professor.

Kent's hippie exterior hides, for about a minute, his demand for excellence and his passion for teaching and creating art. I rarely take a breath while enrolled in his classes but I am always very happy I took them. He's scary but still my favorite!

I took the online class and I found him a bit too much. He expected a lot of a revisions, which is understandable, however, a bit unrealistic for people who can ONLY do the online class. It was almost as if you had to check it EVERY night and revise EVERY day and comment EVERY day. For working class who are doing school part time it can be hard.
