In terms of learning a new programming language, there's not much more a professor can do that Professor Tonning doesn't already do. If you want to learn how to code, you will learn how to code in this class, but you still have to work for it. You won't get punished for thinking outside the box.

I took Professor Tonning's CIS 101 online class for the summer session. Because it was summer it was a lot of work to do each week, but easy to do. He gives detailed instructions for each assignment and has clear grading criteria. The Facebook group was confusing though because he never interacted with the class, it was always another prof.

I've taken several classes - CIS 201 and 202. Tough classes but lectures practically give you the answers for the assignments (which will be difficult if you don't go to lecture). Very nice professor who tries hard - class time can be a lot of fun. Long exams! You will know how to program after this! A+ prof who really knows his stuff and industry.

Professor Tonning's C++ classes can be pretty tough--I'd recommend that anyone taking CIS201 make sure that they (at least) have passed math 90, so they understand the concept of variables. He's tough but fair, has a great sense of humor, has a kind of infectious enthusiasm that people interested in technology can identify with. Great Professor!

Cool class, easy quizzes, but lazy professor. Every week it seems as if I'd need help or just to see if I was turning in work properly and what do I get? NO RESPONSES! What am I supposed to do when I don't understand the assignment and the teacher isn't helping?!

Pretty disappointed in this guy, I was number 5 on his waitlist for CIS 137 online and he didnt accept me into his class. That is not even the most disappointing part, he also failed to give me a courtesy email or response after I reached out to him by email and phone. That is pretty lazy of him considering he is an online professor.

Tonning's CIS 201 class was one of the best classes I have taken, to date, at VVC. He is an excellent teacher, and if you need the help, he's happy to spend some 1 on 1 time with you until you understand it fully.

This class was my first programming class while I grew up playing video games and messing around on the computer this was definitely my first programming experience. I found the class very difficult in the first week, the reason for this was not reading the text. Reading the book is VITAL to passing the class. Just read and you'll pass.

I found his class to be challenging. However, he puts in a lot of effort to make sure you understand the information. Overall I think he is a pretty good professor. He sometimes makes mistakes but in my experience he does not let it affect your grade. He does not grade assignments in a timely manner. It didn't affect my grade though.

If you're new to programming, this class will be very difficult. His lectures are review of assignments so don't expect to learn much from them. Must read the chapters of that given week before class or you will not understand anything he says. Also, homework assignment every week (2-3 assignments). Quizzes are easy, not so much for HW.

Wastes class time (midway through the term I just stopped going to class meetings) and provides little to no feedback on assignments. Had assignments which were turned in early in the term and never got a grade back. Likewise, with the final project. So unless you don't care about learning on your own (and have an option to) skip Tonning.

Took the hybrid class. Attendance recommended but not mandatory. Great guy. Great professor. He is great at helping you with any questions, but the class is easy enough that you won't need it. I saw that older people in the class (25-35+) had a bit of trouble versus the younger people (18-24). Great class. Answers for quizzes online

The class is awesome, and he is always there for help. If you need help just make sure to message him, he will respond quickly. If you are really into programming you should have no problem with the class at all, and the communication between him and student is awesome. There are a lot of projects to do, but if you work they're easy to finish.

Excellent instructor. Provides an online VoIP forum (Teamspeak) where he will answer any of your questions. He's not always online, and sometimes takes a couple days to respond to email, but otherwise loves what he teaches and is very clear and helpful.

Good teacher. he will help you just email him the code. does get side tracked sometimes by another students question. More of a do it yourself course if you are afraid to ask for help.

If you can take the class with another teacher and probably try to take it in person. The class page was disorganized and confusing. I ended up teaching myself. The instructions from the text exercises and the instructions from him are vague and usually conflicting with one another.
