Globalization with Scherlen was a fantastic experience. You will learn a lot and she doesnt allow laptops for note taking so be prepared to write. Readings are dense and in large quantities for her exams which are solely all short-essay based questions. Great lectures. Genuine and kind person who makes you feel comfortable to ask questions.

Very knowledgeable about the subject and gives great perspective in lectures. She made me think of things in a way that I hadn't really before. Tests are EXTREMELY comprehensive and long. I stressed about her exams more than any other class. However she does give an in depth study guide which helps. Kind of a slow grader for tests too which sucked.

She might be a good professor in other classes, but globalization trashed my GPA. Lectures are useless and mind-numbing. Exams are so extremely difficult (all essay questions by the way) that everybody around me did not make more than an 80 on any exam. Good luck is all I have to say.

Class is mostly lectures and easy quizzes. There are three tests across the course including the final, she grades fairly, but it'll take a test before you know how much she wants. She wants a lot, but she gives you study guides and a list of potential questions.

Dr. Scherlen is absolutely wonderful! She really wants you to get into the topics covered and encourages both in class and out of class participation. She is really funny but won't be afraid to call you out if you say something ridiculous. Just participate and come to class and you'll be fine!

I've had this professor twice so far and taking another class with her come this fall semester. She is very knowledgeable and explains things pretty clearly. She grades semi tough for exams but gives a study guide with everything that will be on the test so as long as you study that you'll be good. Overall id recommend her for sure.

Had to take this class for my minor and I regret it every day that I have to walk in to class. She is a terrible professor and is rude. I was under the impression that there is no such things as a stupid question, but the way she responds to makes you feel like an idiot. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone. BEWARE!

She's a great teacher and has a very interesting back story. She focuses on class discussion and participation. If you are on your phone, she doesn't say anything; however, she notes it in her attendance and your grade will suffer. She gives study guides for her tests, and with proper preparation you will be fine.

Dr. Scherlen is a great professor. She's passionate about what she teaches, but is a hard grader. I had her for Model UN and even though the class was enjoyable, the papers you right have to be exactly what she wants or else you make a bad grade. Fun class, I would recommend this to anyone interested in global conflicts. Take her for a challenge.

Comment:
Dr. Scherlen was horrible. The grading criteria for just about everything was super vague, and she didn't even grade the reading reactions 90% of the semester, so you have NO IDEA what you're making or how to do better. The effort you put in is not rewarded - I deserved a B, I got a C. On top of that, she creates a hostile learning environment.

Dr. Scherlen is my FAVORITE professor at App state. Her classes (I've taken 3) are very challenging but also very interactive. You will learn more in her classes than you have in your entire college career. I went to her office many times when I didn't understand something and she was very happy to help and was so sweet. TAKE HER

This class was basically a model UN and was amazing. As an American Politics major I had very limited knowledge about international politics but this class increased my knowledge exponentially. The interactive learning element of this class has made it my favorite call in college thus far!

I've taken several courses with Dr. Scherlen and while she is incredible intelligent and very knowledgeable in the Political Science field, sometimes it can be very intimidating to ask a "stupid" question because she's that smart. I was a senior taking her class and I felt really behind in her classes for my PS major. Very nice, fair grader, etc.

Absolutely the most knowledgeable professor I've ever had. Conflict and Mediation (United Nations) is a brilliant class (it includes a lecture portion and a simulation) a must for Global Studies as well as PS majors. Instructor is more than willing to help if you put in the time both in and outside of class. This course is worth the work!

An incredibly brillaint speaker and communicator - frankly one of the most intelligent professors they have to offer. However, her borderline "female dog" type of attitude outside the classroom is repulsive. She never seems willing to assist students if you come to her unclear on a subject, and her entire body language is just unapproachable...evil

I took 3 of her classes as an undergrad, my favorite being War on Drugs. It is obvious that this is her forte! There was a lot of out of class reading and research. Expect to study 4X longer than you actually sit in class (if you want an A)!

I've had Scherlen for 4 classes.A class a semester for 2 years. I am a ps major and by far she is the most knowledgeable in the department. Those of you who are complaining about amount of reading or how hard he tests are need to realize she is teaching ps for potential MAJORS. If you can't handle it, maybe you should consider changing your major.

I took her over summer for US Foreign Policy. The class was really interesting, but it was a lot of work. Do not take for an easy A.
