Such a wonderful, and pleasant professor. He's extremely intelligent and a truly talented writer. He's very approachable, and humble too. I took this in the summer and we'd read poetry out in the grass on nice days. He's secretly a tough grader, but if sees your dedicated, he'll often go easier. I would definitely take a class with him again!

Absolutely inspiring and kind and wonderful. I get the impression that I could take the same Simmons class each semester and have it be totally different each time based on the questions guiding his soul, and ours, at the time. (If I hadn't taken his class as a graduating senior I'd be taking many more!)

Comment:
Professor Simmons is a very caring, funny man. He tends to go off on tangents and is pretty monotone, but if you actually listen to him he's pretty funny. His only downside is that he is extremely boring. He is very philosophical as well and extremely intelligent. He can tell if you tried on your papers or not and will grade accordingly.

Prof. Simmons is a very intelligent and friendly professor. His classes are very lecture based, sometimes he simply continuously spoke for the entire 75 minutes, so a good attention span is need to do well in his classes. Basic input of paying attention and reading the texts will result in learning a LOT about whatever subject you take from him

The best professor at UI. Don't take him if you don't want a wide ride and to learn things you never even imagined.

Comment:
Prof. Simmons requires zero busy work, but he is a considerably tough grader. The issue I have with the course is the content. However, if you enjoy metaphysical/theological conversations every class then you will really enjoy his courses. Overall his course is easy, provided you show up and write two extraordinary (very text driven) papers.

Genius. Incredibly humble and genuinely friendly. Stickler on attendance, though he cancels class often. Unreasonable reading load, but not necessary to do all reading to do well. Enjoys talking to class, enjoys listening to them talk much less (or so the lack of discussion in the class would suggest). Atchd. printed comments to (only) written work

Incredibly bright guy, really nice, sort of scattered; like he's surprised that you occasionally can't keep up with him. Take non-fiction writing with him, it's awesome.

delightful, inspiring and an amazing connector of ideas. Who else has their students read 'the prince', shakespeare, critical theory, freud, and more in one class and make it all come together with a great big "bam!" I daresay, no one. Take his classes if you are willing to be introduced to seemingly foreign ideas that are, in fact, innately human.

Incredibly inspiring. Tom's the oddball every English department needs. Being in his class is so comfortable, sometimes you forget that you're in the cold fortress that is EPB.

From Plath to Thompson, Simmons knows his stuff. He is also an accomplished poet and memoirist. He listens to all students and never steps on anybody, although he can play the ten-dollar-word-game with the students who throw it out there. He also encourage

If you like structure, I wouldn't reccommend Tom, but if you like reading books in the grass, go for it. Lots of books, lots of cancelled classes, lots of tangents.
