Do not buy the text book as I never had to use it. Furthermore, it is lecture heavy and the notes can always be found online; you do not have to write it. Very easy class.

Comment:
PHIL 220 is all about logic and probability which can be difficult to grasp. Shogenji took the time to explain everything in detail and provide extra examples when needed. We as the students set the pace for the class and we didn't move on until each of us understood the unit. Made funny jokes and taught us about Japan! Great Professor.

Tomoji is hands down an awesome Prof. Although he may seem a little off at first, he's truly hilarious. His classes are all lecture style; watching a powerpoint and taking notes, or not (they're all online). You will take 3 exams and write 9 "papers" (1-3 pages each). Also, easy grader and cares about students grades!! May give extra credit!

He is the best. quite simply. All around nice guy loves teaching. Always runs to class and around campus like hes late for somthing. Hes a great guy. Loved his class, very laid back and pretty easy if you do the work. Can hand in stuff a little late and get full credit. I recieved a letter of recommendation from him to transfer. Take him!

Anyone who says Tomoji is a bad teacher clearly doesn't have a brain. He is the greatest human being to walk this earth. If you fail his class you are unintelligent. He's incredible. Side bar: I've never taken one of his classes.

Professor Shogenji is an excellent teacher. He's a kindly fellow, and down to earth, traits which lend themselves well to the subject matter, which can be daunting and tough to digest. But he explains complex concepts in an easy to understand manner. He is accessible and a fair grader. Good sense of humor, knows his stuff. Highly recommend!

The only downfall is his grading of papers. As an English majors in Honors, he consistently down marked my papers. The more bland the paper the better it was graded, however some papers he would mark down and change words to their syllable even if logically sound. He wouldn't listen when I tried to reason my work, either. Frustrating.

Fun teacher, very eccentric. Somewhat boring, PowerPoint-oriented class, but all the information is provided and easily accessible to you. Friendly and willing to provide insight. Content is tough to study, he provides a good study guide but really nothing extensive. Highly recommended!

I'm upset that I bought the textbook because I only had to refer to it once. Expect to stare at a power point for the whole class period. Decent amount of work. Nice guy, but he is really disorganized.

He is a nice teacher, but the subject itself its confusing and the way he teaches doesn't make it easier. Even though it is a gen-ed course, i wouldn't advise taking it unless you are in a math or science field.

Very friendly and helpful. He does a good job relating the material to common situations, which helps. There are plenty of writing assignments but they're easy enough and it's great prep. for exams. A fair amount of reading, though not really neccessary as long as you follow his powerpoints...which he provides online. Overall a great course.

Definitely take him for Asian Philosophy but not for Intro to Logic. His talents and strong points are suited for one but messy for another. In that class he makes careless mistakes, confuses many easily, and majority were failing. Is he bad? No. Does that course need someone better? It's too tough to say no.

I took this class because I needed some credits this semester & I am so happy I chose this course. Prof. Shogenji is AWESOME. The assignments are simple- about 10 1 pg papers & 2 5-6 pg papers. If you show up to class you don't even need to read the text (I didn't read anything and got an A on each one). Great class, great professor, learned a lot.

If you don't like putting in effort and just want an easy C4 don't take this one. He does make students work but hes so cute that it makes it ok lol. If you do take him take advantage of the questions before class officially begins he will explain anything.

I took several courses with Tomoji, he is one of the best professors at RIC. He is very helpful, has a unique way to make tough concepts understandable even to most duds in his classes and his quirky demeanor keeps the class interesting through the semester, even if you're not a big fan of philosophy. Make sure you use his notes at the library!!!

i took him for GE3, and he's okay (realllly nice and funny). the class (philo 165) starts off interesting but towards the end, you start to drift off. the subject matter is slightly painful at times, but tomoji makes it as interesting as possible. he gives a decent amount of writing, too. agh. the exams are multiple choice though (easy).
