Comment:
Charles Whitney knows his stuff but is extremely dull. The reading response questions he provides never get discussed all the way through. Do them even though they aren't graded because he uses 1 or 2 each for the take home exams (3). If you don't mind teaching yourself, then by all means, take him. One of the most boring classes have ever taken.

I'm assuming this is Charles Whitney. I took his 231 world lit class online and he is absolutely fantastic and helpful! Syllabus is completely scheduled and organized to the T! Lots of reading (obviously its world lit) do the work and readings and make sure you answer the essay questions each week and you'll be fine!

So boring. So very boring. Granted, the man is very knowledgeable on ALL things Shakespeare. But unless you're just absolutely in love with Shakespeare don't take this class with him. He lectures for the full hour and fifteen and arbitrarily will invite you to add input.

This man is brilliant! Don't take his class if you don't actually want to do the work and participate. You can learn a ton from him if you actually pay attention. There was a lot of reading and writing, tests are all written but he is very helpful and grades fairly.

Not my favorite class, but that was partly my fault. Do the readings, go to the class and participate every once in a while and you'll do fine. All the test are take home essays (not as easy as it sounds) but as long as you DON'T do them last minute you should do fine.

Very intelligent professor but it took several weeks to get used to his teaching style. He is funny once you understand his sense of humor. The class is a difficult combination of literary history, philosophy, and criticism. Three take-home exams (not easy) and one in-class presentation. He expects students to participate in class discussions.

Prof Whitney is a font of Shakespearean knowledge. He challenged me to not rest of my laurells and actually made me work for my grade. This was my first English class in the higher levels. Lots of reading and writing, but if you can support your opinion, he will support you.

Professor Whitney challenges his students. He is passionate, fun and interesting, mostly. The course load is heavy, and attendance and participation are mandatory. Prepare to learn a lot, and spend a lot of time working.

At first I was freaked out by him, because he was so abstract and I didn't understand him sometimes. But he's really helpful and really funny, if you get his sense of humor. He gets really mad when people skip his class. Put in the work and you'll do well.

I loved Professor Whitney. He will make you think outside the box, but great personality and more than willing to help. I am planning on exhausting his classes, I am looking forward to taking him again!

Charles Whitney is smart, awkward, shy and just a real pleasure to be around. His sense of humor is great, and even more enjoyable when most people don't understand if he's joking. He asks a lot of his students, but not too much, and only because he cares so much.

Comment:
While I really like Professor Whitney, he has a great, dry, sense of humor, his classes leave something to be desired. You're very much on your own in his class, which is OK, but a greater sense of direction would be nice when the exams come around. That said, he is extremely knowledgeable, and a good man.

Took the Shakespearian Tragedy English as a freshman, I think that irritated him a bit. He kept suggesting that those who were over their heads drop. He ate his hat when I passed with an A. Not that it was easy--you really are on your own most of the time--but it was so interesting. I loved this class. Suggestion: Think outside of the box.

Dr. Whitney is a very nice man, however, you really do have to think in his class. His lectures do go on and on and on, but if you talk to him, he will help you if you need. He worked with me and my hectic schedule, and I believe he will work with anyone as long as he sees they are giving their best effort. Not for the faint.

Whitney's teaching style is very ineffective. The class I had was once a week, three hours each class. 1 1/2 hours was devoted to students reading their essays aloud to the class and then discussing the essays. I wanted to learn about Shakespeare! Instead i learned nothing.

Yes, he does make you read and write a lot, but Dr. Whitney is extremely effective as a professor. My often differing opinions have always been well-received as long as I've supported them. He makes you think about the material and learn it, but isn't that what we're here for?

Don't take this class. It is long, boring, and there is too much work for the semester. 4 presentations, 3 long essays,1 long midterm, 1 long final...UGH! I don't want to hear about Paradise Lost for the rest of my life.

I had Whitney for a Shakespeare class, and never had any opinions so I was okay in that class. Then I decided to take a Milton class, and I actually had opinions in that class, and Whitney was SOOO RUDE. and i'm not the only one. Don't expect to have an opinion. Whitney is an ARROGANT PROFESSOR!

Whitney is brilliant. You have to do a lot of extra reading and write like there's no tomorrow, but you learn a lot. His lectures can be boring, but he is NOT rude. Take him if you're up for a challenge and/or have a light class schedule.
