Professor Sowards was easily the best I have learned from at UI. He will constantly challenge you to put forth your best work, and always find time to meet and help you push yourself in the right direction. Highly recommend.

Legendary western/environmental history professor. Keep up with the reading and put forth your best writing and you'll get a lot out of the class. Class discussions are pretty important so don't miss class. I actually thought he was one of the better lecturers I've had while here.

His classes are hard only if you are lazy about it. As soon as effort is made on your end his courses are amazing and you take away so much from them.

Dr. Sowards is one of the best professors I've ever had. He at least cares enough about his students to challenge them.

Dr. Sowards may be tough, but if you put in the effort you will take a lot from him. I had no interest in this course and by the end had found a new passion and my career. Suck it up, put in the work. It's worth it!

Had him for both Core 125 and 175. Expect quite a bit of reading and bringing notes to class for discussion. Very few essay papers!

I'm only a freshman but I can already tell this is NOT the kind of prof you want in college. Avoid.

This class is difficult in the amount of reading that you are responsible for, however, if you get it done and are engaged in conversations you will learn a lot and get a good grade.

He's an awesome guy. My advisor as well, bt he's also a a really good guy. He likes student engagement and it's hard to sneak by in that class without doing the reading. Take him, he's worth it.

Specializes in Western and Environmental History. Quite willing to help students outside of class. Fairly high course requirements. Not a particularly exciting lecturer but he is a good guy. Recommended.
