The EASIEST professor ever. Attendance isnt mandatory, lectures can be dull but every now and again theyre engaging. Discussion post every week (literally just one post), two papers 750+/-, and a final. Easy grader and understands that youre trying regardless if you miss something. Great teacher! Taking him again next semester.

He's very boring. Sometimes the lectures are interesting, but he literally just reads off his web courses course because it used to be an online class. Two papers and a final plus 1 point discussions due weekly.

Great professor who is very passionate about the course material and really knowledgeable. Learned a lot last semester. Lots of reading, but when you come into class he clarifies what we covered. Only a few assignments, and the paper was relatively easy. Overall, I would highly recommend.

This African Humanities course was really interesting, especially since Dr. Janz has spent years in South Africa. The material is a mix of reading, videos, art, and music--never dull but you'll need to allow enough time to view it all. Well-organized and clear instructions. Mid-term and final hard, include essay questions, but very fair grader.

Took humanities online with this professor. I don't think it's a hard class just a lot of work. There's discussions and quizzes that correspond to each module. I would suggest to take online if you can't work your schedule to go to the actual class. Just do everything that's asked to get a decent grade. Not too bad, good luck!

Very interesting class. Dr. Janz is very knowledgeable on the subject. The book is a must and everything comes out of the readings. It is a lot of reading and essential in order to pass the class. 3 papers and 2 tests.

Took him for senior seminar, he's a nice guy but grades somewhat harshly. It was a long class but he split it up well by letting us work in groups for the first hour. His methods are very effective in helping you to learn the material, and he gives study guides for exams. Very clear in his directions.

Dr. Janz is very helpful and actually cares about his students. The course content was interesting, although class was a tad bit boring since it was 3 hours long. I'd take another course with him, though!

I felt completely lost MOST of the semester. Fortunately, he gave the exam questions in advance. Final was a take-home. I was worried most the semester, but got a B+. Only take if you're really into critical theory (which is critical of capitalism & modern culture, but the class is not overtly so). Open class discussions daily, really interesting.

I accidentally took phi 4804 instead of a freshman level class my freshman year and thought I was going to fail, but Mr. Janz made it so interesting and was understanding when it came to our reports that I ended up with a B and could have done better if I'd put much effort forth. very nice guy, take him if possible

One of my favorite classes overall in college. Tough course, but if you show up and pay attention, you should be fine. The material is so interesting. The professor is GREAT! He seems to know just about everything which is really quite amazing. The class is a little difficult at first, but it's well worth the time/money/confusion.

Ambiguous assignments and exams. I guess that's to be expected from a PHI class, but there was very little foundation for it. Very difficult class. Janz is a nice man and very knowledgeable about the subject, but assumes you are too.

Take Dr. Janz! I'm graduating with two degrees this semester (180 hrs), and his (gen ed) intro to philosophy class was one of the best I've taken. He was on my thesis committee too, and he was very helpful, accessible and ... Well, cool. He plays bass and knows everything. Sometimes at the same time.

Really interesting class discussions. Sometimes he'd go off on tangents, but usually engaging and fun. There are little-to-no lecture notes, so for the tests you basically have to read the whole book and know everything. Although the tests are challenging, he's an easy grader, so as long as you try, he'll give you credit. Really genuine, nice guy!

This class is difficult. It requires a lot of work and there is not much instruction regarding assignments, they are very open-ended. It would be nearly impossible for anyone to get an A in this class. That being said, I learned more in this class than any I have taken before. Take Janz if you genuinely want to work & learn about the subject

I really like Janz as a professor. I thought the class was really engaging and interesting. The in-class discussions were interesting but not at all helpful on the test. His tests are probably the hardest I've ever taken, however he is pretty lenient on the grading. Make sure to atleast answer each question and he'll give partial credit.

I took him for Modern Humanities and enjoyed him and his class very much. He is interesting and funny in a dry way. He uses all the arts for class discussion...art, music, literature, film. I definitely didn't like missing his class even if I was sick or something.
