Comment:
Dr. Blackmer is one of the best professors I have ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to understand the information. His class is challenging, but he is always willing and available to help. If you do poorly in his class it's your fault. Attend class and don't get caught texting! I would highly recommend him as a Prof!

I've had dr Blackmer three semesters and he's great, all you have to do is find him after class and he will help with ANYTHING. Anyone looking to take this class, simply study any and all practice problems in your book, because dr Blackmer likes these questions and refuses trick questions in such a tough subject!

Gary Blackmer is a very smart professor, and is rather funny. However, a lot of work must be put in outside of the class.95% of the classes consist of just practice problems. He works very quickly and is rather hard to keep up with. I wish that he provided more practice exam problems to study from. Be prepared for tough, scantron only tests.

Comment:
Course is easy with appropriate effort. He says attendance is mandatory & will call on people during the semester for attendance grade, though final grade did not include attendance. If you study the book chapters well, you'll ace the exams- even if you never go to class. Lectures can be confusing, though he is helpful during office hours,

I really want to like Blackmer, but the fact of the matter is that he made the class more confusing which was not good on top of already difficult material. He curves graciously, but that is because he doesn't communicate what is on his exams and students can't prepare properly for his exams. The course itself definitely demands lots of time.

I go back and forth on if I liked Blackmer or not. When you needed help, he was always willing. I did not agree with the way he grades sometimes. You will definitely have to work in this class, and put in the time.

Organic Chem is a difficult class to begin with, but Blackmer does a good job of explaining it. We fell a bit behind in lecture, but he did not expect you know what he did not teach. He has a high expectation of students and will curve tests to allow students to succeed; combined with a "C" being 65-75%, this class is passable if you do the work.

Difficult. You can tell he loves what he does, but that's about it. Inconsistant with test material vs. what is actually taught. He will call on you during class so be prepared, he might make fun of you for taking too long to answer the question. The chem department at WMU is just plain terrible, so there's really no great teacher.

He is not an easy professor but very solid at teaching what you need to know. Although each class may not be fun just by copying down his notes from lecture exactly you should at least get a B-. I've had him before and believe I would fair better if most professors taught in a manner similar to his.

I found this class extremely hard and it was not easy for me to pass. His notes were not helpful at all because he would start throwing random numbers on the board and you would have no idea where they are coming from. He also would call on random people to answer questions in front of everyone.. I hate that type of pressure. Nice guy, but yeah..

One of WMU's better Chem Professors. Old fashoned but know his material and breaks it down easily. If you take the time to study the material, you should be successful.

Had General Chem II and Orgo I with him. Very smart and nice guy. Very good teacher. Usually people who slam him are students who are struggling with Gen Chem I or II, and don't know how to study chemistry, so they blame it on him, because no teacher ever told them how bad they are at chemistry, when in high school. Good teacher, if you are smart.

Terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible professor. Does not know how to teach or explain subject matter clearly. Exams do not reflect what is taught in lecture and are twice as hard. He even made a girl cry during lecture. Avoid at all costs. He could care less about his students and how well they do.

This man is a good teacher and didn't expect you to know things he hadn't taught you. I took Mezei before him and had a hard time. Took the class again with Blackmer over the summer and easy A! For me at least. Should have taken him to begin with.

He doesn't write his own tests. The exams are computer generated based off the OWLS which are on the computer. Basically the lecture was a complete waste of time. The only point in going to lecture is so he might be able to remember your face, BUT I don't think he cares. Basically you have to teach yourself everything. He is ALWAYS late to lec

Dr Blackmer is pretty good, its chemistry so it will be a harder subject and you have to apply yourself. Lots of OWL questions but all general chemstry classes have to do owls. Exams are a little hard but he curves. Dont complain, do your work, ask questions, get help if you need to and you should be fine..welcome to college!

Good teacher. Although I had knowledge of the subject prior to taking the class, it seemed pretty simple. Just understand the underlying math associated with it and you'll do fine. And he's very lenient too. As long as you try, you'll be rewarded. Also, when I took his class, I got to skip the Final because I got all A's in my midterm exams.

I took this exact same class at a different school, but WMU made me take this again for a pre-req. I understood everything before taking this class, now I'm confused all over again. He's no help. He tests & has material on the OWLs that he doesn't go over, so you have to teach yourself. He's pretty sarcastic too, makes you hate him THAT much more.
