I do not understand why everybody has such negative comments! They are completely unfair and they do not do justice to this professor's complexity.It sounds like many of the students are not used to having their normative views of the world contested. If you are willing to have your eyes opened, then take her class.If not, stay out.She is amazing.

Wow! What a great instructor. I was ready to drop out until I took her class. I felt re-vitalized! Thank goodness for Dr. Ober!

Lectures were disorganized. I'm used to a lot of reading, but hers was totally unmanageable, not to mention confusing. It was clear she didn't want to be there. Even the TA disliked her.

This was an easy class. However, lectures were not very interesting, lots of readings and MANY out dated movies! I learned nothing new in this course. Also on the test stats like no other! No sociological analysis..just percentages about everything that you'll forget in about a week. Good at memorizing percentages-take!Easy A/B but NOT for learning

After taking three of this professor's classes, i can safely say she knows what she is talking about. Her lectures are always interesting and urge self-reflection. She should be professor already, rather than lecturer. Extra kudos to her for opening a socially concious store.

Comment:

Brings her ideological baggage to class. Heavy left leaning feminst - her one sided views and preaching get old real fast (and I'm liberal/feminist). If you like head in the clouds close-minded liberalism, Ober is perfect. If you want practical knowledge, go volunteer in your community and read some books, more worthwhile than her class.

Lecture was very boring and she's not good at lecturing period. I didn't find it useful. Readings are interesting but it's ALOT. She doesn't curve and tests u on very little details in the readings..kinda sucks. The TA's were pretty koo though.

I really enjoyed this class. The lectures were not bad and the movies were entertaining and helped clarify the lectures. My TA was awesome....go to lecture cause there are pop quizzes that will affect your grade.

Lectures were drawn out-what she said in lecture could have been condensed into about ten minutes of talking. Videos shown in class were irrelevent. Readings were numerous and professor did not go over them in class, even though the class was still tested on the readings. If it weren't for the TA's help, the tests would have been difficult.

Prof. Ober couldnt keep anyone's attention. Info she provided was somewhat sporatic and didnt go over any of the reading. WAY too much reading per week, but if u dont do it u take the chance of being screwed over w/ random quizzes in lecture and the midterm/final. Kathy Littles was my TA-HIGHLY reccommended, at least she was very clear and concise.

Professor Ober could have been absent from class everyday and it wouldn't have made a difference. She played irrelevant movies almost everyday and read all her lectures which led to monotone boring lectures. Her tests were managable but the readings were long and mundane. Her T.A's are great and an A is definitely possible but its not worth it .

I thought this class was well presented. The concepts were laid out pretty well and it was easy to tell what she wanted out of us. Having said that, the reading load is pretty heavy and only about half is very interesting. Read, and go to class (pop quizzes and participation points) and you'll do fine. Good for a GE if you need it.

I actually thought Ober was alright for a last minute hire for the class. The topics were interesting but the videos and readings were on the boring side. I did like that she gives out study sheets for the midterm and final. And missing lectures could hurt you since she likes to give pop quizes. The TAs are awesome and help a lot!

Ober was actually a last-minute hire for the teaching job. She makes good points during her lecture but she fails to go beyond and debunk them so the theories she presents are very generalized and not so interesting. I felt I learned more from the movies she showed than her. Readings were not so interesting but not too heavy.

Professor Ober is uncompromising. Even if you are sick and have a doctor's note she will not let you make up work or give extentions. She does not care about student needs. She seems to think that her course is more important than the health of her students. I say this as a student who didwell in the class, certainly no thanks to the professor.

Ober is a horrible teacher. She assigns reading that is impossible to accomplish. She just shows videos all the time during lecture. And only 2 out of the 20 were entertaining. I like the discussion part tho. And my TA (Kathy Littles) is really awesome. Ober sucks and she's a ****. But I still like the topic of the class. It's also good for GE.
