Whelan is the worst professor I've ever had. He is completely confusing in class, no one can follow what he's saying half the time. He asks a student a question, then interrupts him when he's trying to answer. In a research paper, doesn't want to read intellectual arguments, just wants you to reiterate what's in the textbook. Absolutely TERRIBLE!!!

WORST prof at UR. Do everything you can to avoid his class. Expects class participation but really only wants to hear himself talk. Grading is completely arbitrary-- he does not want well written papers, he only wants to hear what he has said in class (word for word). So boring and not helpful at all. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!

Incredibly knowledgeable about VA politics. Better pedagogically than most profs. Expects you to be as interested as he is. Expects better essays than most. Class will be difficult. Got good grade, but worked my tail off, to detriment of other classes. Still, highly recommended, youll learn a ton.

Difficult professor...knows his stuff. Dry at times, and at others so interesting. Pay attention to EVERYTHING he writes on the board, and be prepared to spend a lot of time reading thoroughly through numerous readings.

Whelan knows his stuff, but don't even consider taking his classes unless you have time...they are extremely intense and very difficult. Pay a lot of attention to what he says/writes on board in class.
