Comment:

Without a doubt BEST CLASS at Cornell. Prof Katzenstein changed my life. I genuinely believe this class should be required. Anybody who wasn't fortunate enough to take this class has missed out immensely. This class will give you an in depth understanding of systematic racism and the carceral system and everyone can benefit from this. Amazing prof.

Great professor! passionate about the subject and really wants to help her students. even though it's a large class, she really wants to get to know as many students as possible. also she really puts extra effort into making the class interesting through field trips and guest speakers

One of those life changing classes that makes you realize you have an interest in something you may never have thought about before. Don't expect to just look at ppt's and get away with it, but if you actually do the work, an A is in reach, I promise. She is VERY smart, (a bit biased), and really cares about students...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Comment:

HARD class. Mary is very provocative and fosters very good classroom discussion. Great reading material - books are a keeper. On the other hand, the assignments are a bit nebulous and confusing. Also, the TAs in general are HARSH graders (mine TAed this class for 3 years and just gave Bs like a machine). Great class if GPA deflation is desired!

I took prisons w/MK my senior year and it was a blast. She can be a bit biased but freely admits it and is a very engaging lecturer. I had the opportunity to ride with her to see a prison-- she is very personable and genuinely interested in her students as individuals. I'd recommend any class with her. *I saw her wear the same purple sweater daily.

THE best professor I've had in college. Period. She presents the prison system from every angle, assigns fascinating readings, is a fair grader, a dynamic lecturer, incorporates great speakers and optional trips, great at feedback, personally contacts students who say something in class she likes, and, I think, is as unbiased as is possible.

I think that Mary is really great. She is very articulate and has not been anti-Christian/Catholic in the class. She is more than willing to help/meet for coffee and will support a strong interest in government and prisons. You might not get an A.
