Fiction workshop was a blast, very manageable workload. Phil's super nice and caring; def go to office hours to talk about your work & other writing-related things, he's super chill. Does give extensions if you really need. Do proofread your stories throughly, he grades on technical things, as tries to be unbiased toward genres and story concepts.

Prof. Baruth is amazing. He is very generous with extensions; one time he offered it to me when I wasn't going to ask, but I needed it badly. He is extremely intelligent. I could listen to him talk all day. I highly respect his opinions, and I highly respect him as a person. I want to know his opinion on everything I read.

I really enjoyed this Postmodern lit class. The class is a mixture of theory and literature, but he breaks the theory stuff down well because he knows that it's conceptually straining for people. It's a pretty big lecture for an English course, 40-ish people, but he is engaging and seems like a kind person. I definitely recommend this course!

He's just a really great guy, who really cares and will write you a thoughtful letter for each piece of writing and they're always really sweet and detailed. Great sense of humor, it's pretty dry and he's got some good stories. He really made me believe in my writing and encouraged me a lot. He's one of my favorite teachers here.

Lives up to the hype. Takes a lot of time to provide individual feedback to students which is refreshing.

Philip is a great professor. He makes the most dull topics interesting. He's also really funny, and is pretty easy going. But his exams are long and the readings even longer, so expect to put in a decent amount of time.

Comment:
The Postmodernism lecture is three hours long, so naturally he has a lot of time to fill. Readings are interesting, but the size of the lecture (about sixty students) and the lack of engagement made the course feel slow. Baruth has a good sense of humor, but isn't personable. Try to do all the readings. He likes to hear himself speak, so speak up.

Comment:
Baruth is incapable of an off-hand remark. He sounds low key but each remark is crammed with intelligence, and craft. He is also KIND, and patient, seems to honor each student, and as a teacher very generous. If you're lucky enough to take this class (Writing) you will remember it until you are very, very old.

TAKE HIS POSTMODERNISM CLASS, especially if you're an ENGS major. This sounds absurd but it seriously comes in handy in other classes in ways you couldn't imagine.

Professor Baruth's class is fun and easy. The stories and poems you read are almost always good, and he's a really easy grader. He is a really smart and helpful guy, although he only had one office hour a week. Totally a worthwhile class; I got a lot out of it.

Clarissa? Clarissa?! smart guy, I think this is one of his weaker classes, supposedly he is a great writer, but this class on the novel is pure hell. I hate this class more than any other ive taken at UVM, wish I could have taken a writing class with him instead of this one.

One of the BEST teachers I ever had!!! The work is challenging but you learn so much-- the takeaway is tremendous. Prof. Baruth has high expectations, but he will work with you as much or little as you want to help you be successful. He's a brilliant teacher!!

He is an amazing writing professor, I would highly reccomend this class to any serious writers looking to see what they need to do to get published. Lots of R&R of others' work, but thats not too much.
