He's a very nice guy and well connected in the int'l community . He has a lot of interesting speakers and his powerpoints are clear, but he doesn't really teach. His book selection is amazing and you learn a great deal from that. There are 4 grades for the class-if you want to do well, participate often in class and work hard on the final 25-pager.

While a very knowledgeable and sometimes amusing professor, he is very difficult to understand and provides no useful feedback on assignments. This coupled with only 4 real grades creates major confusion when final grades are issued.

Professor Zhao is not for everyone. But his class is easier than it seems because there's only really one big paper. Also, his focus is on his more interesting higher-level classes, where his TA does NOT grade. Don't let the comments about his lower-level classes affect you if you're more up for an advanced Asia course.

He's a really nice guy, and class occasionally gets hilarious. His lectures are typically pretty clear, but he likes to ask you questions, and they're unpredictable, ranging from "what is the capital of Taiwan?" to "what are the countries that make up ASEAN?" He does none of the grading. There are hardly any grades. Somehow I ended up with an A.

Professor Zhao is a great person and truly cares about his students. He's very much an intellectual and a well-respected scholar in his field, and that sometimes takes priority over his teaching abilities. He doesn't always explain everything clearly and is a semi-difficult grader, but its worth taking the class just to be able to network with him.

Very interesting and experienced. Often also funny (like talking about having "Sake!" with his friends). Didn't use textbooks, instead opting for topical literature (which is, in my opinion, a good thing).

Professor Zhao is an expert in the field and very knowledgable but his poor English can be a communication barrier. His lectures are a little boring. Also, the TA graded everything. Interesting class but not the best prof.
