He is very sweet. lectures may be dry or boring for those who are less history-minded. But as a history major I find myself greatly enjoying his class, he is very accessible and clear about expectations (fair grader). Expect to read but he goes over everything in the lecture. I definitely plan on taking more classes with him. (:

He's pretty awkward and quiet, but he really cares about his students and their wellbeing. He pushed back the due dates of almost all of our assignments, and even cancelled a quiz. He's really sweet, but the 90 min. of straight-up lecture didn't agree with me. Of all the readings he assigned, I probably did 2 at the beginning of the semester

Professor Lim is really knowledgable and passionate about the subjects he teaches. You won't regret taking a class with him. He truly cares about his students and wants them to do well. He is very approachable, so don't be afraid to reach out to him outside of class.

Comment:
Richard knows everything about ancient history and is kind and sweet, but he isn't the best lecturer. The course material is dry to begin with, and the huge amount of readings (which are not all necessary) were a bit overwhelming. Overall, while his teaching style wasn't super engaging, I still learned a solid amount.

Comment:
He is really a sweet person, but not a very good professor. His readings are incredibly long (200-400+ a week) and he tells you to skim but if you do you are likely to miss minute details he expects you to have. His lectures are unclear and kind of all over the place and he is VERY quiet. He is obviously intelligent, but not very helpful.

Comment:
Professor Lim is kind, enthusiastic, intelligent and helpful. He managed to make a relatively dry topic interesting and engaging. One tiny criticism is that his lectures themselves don't teach much and using the textbook heavily will be a must. The readings are dense! If you are doing classics or history I definitely recommend getting to know him.

Comment:
He's such a nice guy, but so boring. However, he's not a bad grader. You don't have to do all the reading to get an A. He's nice and gives you a study guide for the midterm and exams, and his map quizzes are really easy if you study. He's kind of a tough grader with papers, but not too bad. I got an A- in his class.

Comment:
Lim is the sweetest man but a boring professor. He can't lecture very well and assigns an ungodly amount of reading. His study guides are tedious, and there will be things not discussed in class on the midterm/final. The difficulty in the class comes from the difficulty to pay attention to his monotone voice. Give yourself plenty of time to study.

Not a great lecturer. He never makes it through his whole class outline and it can be hard to tell what he actually expects you to remember from the class. He also never answers a question plainly even when it's just a factual inquiry. I did learn from the class but mainly because of the readings. He's a nice guy though.

Nice teacher. Class is fun and easy. Agree sometimes an awkward professor, but he presents the material in an interesting way. Would recommend.

Boring. Speaks in soft monotone for the whole 90 minutes. Nice guy, but really awkward. Assigns a ridiculous amount of reading, and then never goes over it. Have to do a lot of on own studying, as his midterms are hard, and he expects you to know even what he didn't cover. If ancient history is your interest, look into five college options.

took the silk road course and learned quite a bit. classes could be boring, but subject was usually interesting. if you don't like a soft spoken teacher, then don't take his classes. he's also very willing to help if there is something you don't understand. i'm looking forward to taking another class with him.

Seemed to be very knowlegeable but his lectures were not organized and the subject became boring. Very nice guy just not the most exciting or helpful professor.
