Definitely one of my favorite professors at Calvin! He is absolutely filled with knowledge about every historical nuance. He is by far one of the best history professors, I would recommend him to any history student or otherwise! His classes are filled with stories and he specifically relates everything to today. TAKE THIS PROF!

Doesn't always seem like lectures tie into textbook readings/assignments but they usually do and are very interesting. He truly cares about his students and is always open to answering questions after and outside of class.

Hilarious. Interesting lectures. Does not grade homework (but if you do it, it is helpful for test essays). Take notes & listen during lectures because they help for the test too. Very laid-back atmosphere. Fair grader. Easy to approach. Very caring guy and very helpful. Easy A.

I hate history, but this was by the far the best history class I have ever taken. At first I used the textbook a lot, but realized it didn't help a whole lot. His lectures are SUPER great and insightful. Highly recommend taking him! Thoughtful, willing to help and super funny!

Schoone-Jongen was a great professor for making a core class actually interesting. He didn't just repeat the information found in the readings, but elaborated and connected events to present times.

As a history major, Prof. Schooner-Jongen is the man. Take him for any class. He is a WEALTH of information, and his lectures are very interesting. If you are just taking history for core, he teaches 152 like an intro class should be taken: Not that hard. Average reading, 3 tests, and a two papers. Not that hard a grader.

Even though he looks grumpy all the time, he is actually super nice to talk to and is a good teacher. Be ready to read though... The textbook must be read every night (at least 25 pgs a night, 4 nightsweek) plus 2-3 novels on top of that. He calls on people in class, so do the reading!! It's humiliating to not know what's going on when called on.

He is great prof. He made history class interesting and relevant. He begins the 152 class with the Cold war to give the big picture and then works from 1500s on. I really like that. Read the textbook and attend lectures. His tests are based on both & he doesn't review the text in class. Often he talks about current issues.

The class is by no means easy, but if you work hard at learning your notes you will do fine. He really knows his history and will help you if you ask. Don't try to read the books for the papers in one or two nights... they take awhile.

This prof knows his history; I have to give him that. Meeting with him for clarification or to go over what he said about your essay really helps. But this class is not easy--he grades the essays quite harshly. On top of essays, his random geography quizzes helped doom my grade. Don't bother reading the book, just make sure to get to every class.

the first part of class is wasted on useless laughter and then useless stories. what we talk about is class has no correlation to the book readings. finally a power point goes up more than halfway through class, and he brags about the places he has been and pictures on the power point he has taken. worst class at calvin yet. & worst professor.

First, his laugh. I have never heard a prof laugh so much about the stupidest things ie. slugs. Not to mention his laugh is one of the most annoying i have ever heard.

He just keeps rambling on an on. He never uses anything in the book.In a 50 minute class,he talks about really really not important things for 30minutes and then does a powerpoint thing that sums up all the reading, now I'm talking hard core BIG picture. So you don'tknow how much of the specifics you need to learn for tests.

Pay attention in class and you'll do fine. Do assg. ques

He's a really intelligent prof, and he'll help you out if you ask for it. His lectures can sometimes jump around a bit, but if you put in the effort to do the readings and his review sheets you should do fine. If you're lookin' for an easy A though, this isn't it.

Kind of a boring class - and I really like History! This prof. is "interesting" and tends to go off topic. He's a hard grader, but is really passionate about history and is very willing to help if you ask him. Stickler for attendance.

What a weird and kooky guy, but what a wonderful professor! He definitely has high standards, and the class is definitely quite boring, so it makes for a difficult combination, but if you take good notes and email him a lot, you will do fine.
