Balkan was truly a favorite of mine. He was genuinely invested in his subject matter (African Americans and Black art) and his passion was infectious. His voice is a little low but his words are powerful. Great guy

Comment:
Professor Goldberg is an intelligent, funny man. In lectures, he's occasionally unclear and veers off into (admittedly hilarious/insightful/both) anecdotes that get in the way of the content. His 3 tests aren't optimal - they really test your ability to write efficiently. His passion for Chinese calligraphy is infectious. All in all, great guy.

He is a brilliant man but a bad teacher. His class is structured poorly and his exams test your ability to write quickly more than it does the material. He is not helpful outside of class and inflexible about changing exam times. He does give no work tho.

Comment:
You know this professor knows his stuff and is a brilliant man. However, his teaching style is often distant and geared toward his own prerogative rather than towards the students'. He is very organized with his slide presentations everyday; however, he is very quiet when he speaks and does not prepare you well for the two exams you are graded on.

(continued from AH1 to AH5) In general, he is a brilliant man who knows a lot (although as a professor, he should be better prepared for his classes and make sure he dose not make too many mistakes), but he is not a good professor. He almost could never remember students' names, but if he does remember you, make sure it's a good impression.

Comment:
My papers are returned with humiliating comments in terrible handwriting. He dosen't even bother to finish reading a paragraph to leave his comments. He commented on several grammar mistakes in my paper, which turned out to be grammatically correct. Upon figuring out his mistake when pointed out by students, he just ignores them and no apologies.

Comment:
He lectures in a pace totally inconsiderate of students' responses. When asked to return to the previous page because he was going too fast, he refused and said he wouldn't want to mess up his well-prepared slides. He also repetitively refers to his previous teaching experiences, the average is at least twice per class per semester.

Comment:
For example, he would slam doors or suddenly stop the class when bothered by some students' behaviors. He also responds awkwardly when students point out his obvious mistakes. For example, he put material never covered in class on the final review, and excuses himself for the fact that he is teaching too many classes when pointed out by students.

This professor is very brilliant and passionate about Asian Art, and have great pictures in class - I learnted more than expected. However, he is very poorly organized: there are typos in the slides almost in every class,he labels wrong artists for artworks on final reviews, and he misses appointment with students (comments continued in next entry)

Almost everyone got a C- in Arts and Cultures of Asia, no matter how many times you met with him or how much time you spent studying. 1Midterm and 1Final....No chance at a decent grade if you slip, he is a total pile of garbage and doesnt care about anyone either. Although I cant complain because there is no HW or any other assignments.

Not a great teacher. Talks about politics all the time. If you get an A, then you are lucky because he is the pickiest man I have ever met. You can write down everything perfectly and he still wont give you a good grade

A real ****ing ****. He counted points off my final for material I got straight from the textbook and refused to give me credit when I pointed it out to his face. Plus, he can't teach for****.

I can never understand a word he says. No office hours, either. The only thing that's clear is his hatred of certain other members of the faculty. Avoid.

How to get an A in this course, guaranteed: write down exactly what he says during his lectures (or copy someone else's notes) and then show up to class on the day before the midterm/final-- he shows you exactly which works of art will be on the exam. Write that**** down on the test and VOILA! A!
