Comment:
If you want to take McIntosh make sure you're genuinely interested in the topic or else you'll feel bogged down by hundreds upon hundreds of pages of old and obscure readings from the time period. There are only a few grades: two major papers, a midterm paper, a quiz, a final (3 essays) and participation in recitations

Professor McIntosh is such a great guy. Super likeable and funny, but my God this class was boring. Incredibly monotonous reading and presenting on his part. He grades very kindly as long as you understand the material at least rudimentarily. Like I said, a great guy but not a class I'd recommend unless you really, REALLY like European history.

Dr. McIntosh is a great guy; however, this class is insanely hard. Class is comprised of 5 grades and the grading is extremely hard. Unless you are ready to read a ton and put in tons of work out of class for at least a B.

Comment:
Professor McIntosh is a brilliant man who obviously understands the material of the class to almost perfection. However, I can't say he is an effective teacher. His lectures were confusing and often left the class worse off than if they had just read the PowerPoints at home. Few grades, and tough essay-form exams that expect a lot from the student.

He definitely knows what he's talking about and tries his best to keep the lectures interesting. Seems like a pretty nice guy with a sense of humor. However, the class can get a bit dry and there your grade is based off only about 5 papers, which are graded pretty tough.

Comment:
McIntosh's lectures are confusing. He contradicts himself, misspeaks, and backtracks a lot. He is also grumpy when meeting with students outside of class. However, he understands that the material can be hard and that his lectures can be confusing. He grades very easily, so long as you put in the effort and show a bare minimum understanding.

Comment:
Professor McIntosh is an incredibly underrated professor! While he started off a bit awkward and there is a lot of reading for the course, he is very knowledgeable on German history and warfare. I would recommend a decent grasp of early modern European history before taking this class, as he tries to avoid answering too many auxiliary question.

Great guy and knowledgeable professor. You'll read a lot, but the book selection is good. I especially recommend him if you have any interest in the Thirty Years' War.

Comment:
He isn't very difficult, but he is not a very good lecturer, tends to deviate from the topic or spend more time deflecting questions he can't answer or awkwardly trying to include everyone instead of focusing on the lecture. Learned a lot, but the essays were not very related to the learning in the class and did not really prepare us for the exams.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. His lectures are extremely boring and he compares you to other students, so it doesn't matter how good your paper is if other students write better. Worst class I've ever taken

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am an environmental science/Econ major with a 3.7 and I got a B in this class. I have never worked so hard in my life for a B. Not only will Mr. McIntosh not give you any constructive advice AT all, but he grades so harshly it's ridiculous. A paper in his class would get a C whereas it would get an A anywhere else.

I'm a bit shocked reading some of the reviews. He truely tries to get to know everyone and definately answers questions that anyone has and if he can't, he'll look it up and tell you next class. Attendence is not needed, as reading the book will suffice, but his lectures are not that bad, and if you listen, they can replace the reading.

I attended the first 2 weeks of class and had to drop. Unless you are in love with the topic, it is like pulling teeth. The professor is very hard to follow and the book is more helpful than he is. Recitation is like taking a completely seperate class with readings from completely different books. 1 essay quiz, 3 papers, and 1 final.

I wouldn't say that he's unkind, but his class is boring. He is not that hard, but you have to work a lot. If you take a class with him study the textbook over lecture and get to know your TA.

Nice prof. who's interested in the subject. Class has a lot of reading and a lot of notes. Take good notes and you'll do great on the final. Not the most interesting class, so don't take it if you're not interested in the specific material.
