He is extremely elderly and loses his train of thought quickly which can either confuse you or cause you to lose interest. His lectures are boring. Your grade at the end will be a surprise because there is no way to understand how he grades the tests and he does not give essays back. He does not give extra credit either.

Mayer-Mayer needs to RETIRE!Im sure he was pretty good prof back in the day,but he can no longer communicate his knowledge to students.He's unable to complete his sentences,so lectures never make sense. Helpful in office hours though.Tests are pretty tricky.

Professor Mayer should not teach a language class. While he does love classics as a whole, he can not communicate clearly the rules of Latin. Easy grader and does not require too much work, by the end of the semester I had to go back and teach myself everything because I couldn't understand how he was trying to teach latin. Very confusing.

Loved this professor. He in passinate about his field and just wonderful. I took him for two classic classes and never regretted a moment. I loved all of his lectures and he is a great professor.

Do not take Mayer for CLA 101. His lectures are very disjointed and often confusing, and he will regularly contradict himself. He is the slowest grader I have ever seen. By the day of the final, most students had still not received essays from early March. Maybe he's good for Latin in a small class, I dunno...but not for Intro to Mythology!

This guys is terrible, I'm not sure why people gave him positive reviews. This should be an easy and interesting class but he makes it boring and complicated. He will the whole semester in returning your grades from the first exam and will lose the essays. A nightmare of a Professor. Avoid him at all cost.

Although he knows his information, he is a horrible lecturer - which is what every class is. He does not go in order of the book. His tests are not on his lectures, they're on random information. I dropped it because I couldn't stand being bored any longer.

Magister Mayer is bonum! He's a walking Latin encyclopaedia! He cares so much about his students, and wants to make sure we truly understand the material. He makes himself available and will explain the subject to you for as long as it takes. This is a challenging class and you need to go the extra mile to learn the material.

I'll admit, his lectures are boring and you will find yourself falling asleep at times - but the reading material is interesting enough to bring you back. Only one long paper, and two exams. A lot of reading, but given enough time. Take clear lecture notes, known your facts/definitions, and you'll be fine!

Comment:

Prof. Mayer is one of the good reasons to study classics at Hunter. Hardworking, interested in students and material, respectful but no push-over. He's inventive in finding materials, and tolerates wide-ranging responses to presentation. I would say that he is an excellent role-model for students who are interested in becoming teachers.

NIghtmare!!! I was so interested in this subject and he ruined it, very boring; toward end of semester, he was behind and spent 40 min of 4 CLASSES showing vacation slides; GAVE MIDTERM AND FIRST PAPER back at end of semester, grades toughly, exams off the wall, very disorganized

It took forever for him to gve your exams back, very boring and disorganized class. Makes the topic seem very boring, after taking this class I started to hate classical mythology.
