Comment:
Biggest ego of any professor I've ever taken. Never admits any policy or procedure of his is flawed even if the entire class complains. Makes you feel like an idiot for not understanding a topic and enjoys rushing through dense material. Only saving grace is that he gives lots of partial credit and when you think you failed, you usually got a 75-80

Comment:
Catron gives difficult assignments and tests, but makes up for them by not grading as hard. However, the vague and inconsistent directions on labs and homework make these assignments unnecessarily tedious. He also gets frustrated with students easily and comes off as unapproachable despite telling us all how much "he wants to meet with us."

Comment:
Not sure why Dr. Catron gets such a bad rep. I had no programming experience before his class and he was able to help me through his lectures in class and when I went to his office hours. Show that you are putting in effort and he will put in effort to help you too. The class was frustrating at first but you learn his teaching style quickly

Everyone else on here seems to have taken much lower level CS classes, so they might not really understand how he teaches. The tests and quizzes he gives are very straight-forward. He doesn't test you on anything he didn't teach and explain. Only thing people might find annoying is that he leads you to find the answer, rather than giving it to you.

For as much of a bad rep Catron gets on here, he is a dedicated professor with a wealth of knowledge. 122 students complain all you want, but you'll be thanking him later when you ACTUALLY have an understanding of Data Structures/Algs for your next job interview. Suck it up now and take his upper level classes. Then you'll appreciate him.

Comment:
His passive, vague, and disorganized lectures make class drag. Unhelpful during labs. Seems to take pleasure in withholding knowledge from students rather than helping out. Rarely gives adequate directions on homework, and on top of this, test grading is extremely arbitrary and inconsistent. Often rude and discouraging to students as well. Just no.

Comment:
His lectures in class are decent. However, the assignments and lab requirements are extremely unclear. He takes off points for things he did not specify and his tests are picky hand written coding examples. If you want to get shafted by his arbitrary grading, take the class. It's time we got rid of this awful professor.

This professor is one of the worst at Furman. Tests and quizzes are not from lectures or textbook. Do not take this professor.

Mid-term I had to declare this class pass/fail because of its ridiculous nature. The man loves to boast his own knowledge by with-holding it from you. Labs are endlessly frustrating and he offers virtually no help. At the end of the term I considered going to the Dean about this "supposed" professor. Don't take him- even if it's pass/fail.

Comment:
I got a lot more help from other CS students than I got from him. Labs are challenging, which is ok, but he makes you feel stupid if you don't understand something, both in lab and in class. Comes across as arrogant, and class is usually pretty boring. Has an unforgiving homework policy. He's a fair grader, but it's still hard to do well. Avoid.

I don't know why he gets the bad rep; I didn't have a problem with him. He can be vague but he's always willing to help and responds to emails quickly with help. Tests aren't too bad and the projects can be pretty fun. Bottom Line: Don't avoid taking him because of what people have said. They scared me but I found the class one of my more fun ones

I hated him. He made my life a living hell for that damn semester. He was probably the worst "teacher" I have ever had - and I use the term teacher loosely because he shouldn't be one.

He tends to go right through all the topics as if you should already know what he is talking about. He doesn't understand that students have trouble with the basics of a computer language when they have never had programming before.Lab Asst. is savior!

He looks at you like you should already know the *stuff* he is supposed to teach. Unclear, rude, and basically doesnt care when your trying to learn. It may not be on purpose, but either way dont take him unless you have to.

He's very fair in introductory classes because he doesn't expect you to know pointless details. He's hard to find sometimes, but I think that he's a good professor.

very sarcastic, makes you feel like a dumbass when you ask a question, extremely unhelpful during labs - he will only tell you to look at the sheet or figure it out yourself - if you can't you're labeled an idiot. his voice is the equivalent of a lullaby.
