Comment:
If you comply with her rules and are a good student and answer the way she teaches us in class you'll do fine. Make sure you take good notes and pay attention in class. Also take advantage of her as a resource for papers, she likes that and will give good insight. Don't be late for a quiz or test though, she might not let you take it.

Material interesting. Assignments problematic. Considers basic instructions "doing the work for you". Set in personal views, which affects judgment of student analysis. (NOT referring to feminism.) Prepare for hard time getting on same page. Do not expect help from other professors in department. (Better luck with other students? Worth a try.)

She is one of the best professors I had my first semester. Though it is primarily lecture based, she presents the information in an incredibly clear and interesting way. In arguments, she can be a little bit biased, but one can see that she has clearly thought things out. Take her for REL 121!!

Difficult grader, but if you do the work and it shows (even if you don't go above and beyond) you will get a decent grade. she is by far the nicest religion prof i have had yet.

Prof. DeGroot is a very good professor. She explains clearly her expectations. You don't have to do the reading since quizzes are few and sporadic. The information is not horribly difficult to understand. She is a hard grader but I barely studied and I earned a B+. She is the least judgmental and open prof at Calvin.

Comment:
Horrible grader, poor communicator, & biased. She will state her expectations on an assignment and then precede to mark you down because her "requirements" only meet the minimum. If you take her, you must go above and beyond requirements on every single assignment in order to make a decent grade. If you went to a public HS you will fail this class.

I'd advice not to take her. She is judgmental and an overall bad teacher. She skips all over in the class and doesnt follow any order in her class. She acts like the students are still in high school, but has no personality or personal relationship with anyone in the class. She views her class as the only one that students have to take.

she is AWFUL. NEVER TAKE HER. she refuses to help outside of class at all. i had gone to her office multiple times for a research paper we had to write and the only thing she told me was "read for commentaries. THAT DOESN"T HELP WHEN I ALREADY READ 10.

One of the most caring and nonjudgmental profs I've had at Calvin, and very helpful. The course is very discussion based; doing the reading & talking in class will help you learn more, though you can probably get away with skimming/skipping it occasionally.Exams are all essay.Yes, she's a feminist-that's a wonderful thing.Calvin needs more of them!

Terrible. Easily the worst prof I have ever had. Very closed-minded. A lot of interesting things in this course, but they were absolutely ruined by her. Oh, yes, like others have said, fierce feminist who will not accept the opinions of others. Avoid, at least for 121.

She teaches exactly what she puts on her tests. Though she may be a little tough, her tests are completely fair and she grades fairly. If you talk to her out of class about papers she grades it easier.

Great professor! Took this class as core but came out of it deciding to be a religion major! lectures are very interesting and she is very intelligent. Papers can be tough if you dont research, but i often found the topics quite interesting and fun. take her if you can...well worth it!!

Worst Professor I have ever had. Stay as far away from her as possible. She makes you want to do things you never thought you would think of doing to someone. She should not be teaching anywhere.

The prophets has been one of the best classes I've had at Calvin. The content is engaging and she teaches so that the material isn't over your head. Religion classes are tough, but I think De Groot is near the top for the easiest of the 2nd level religion classes. I definitely recommend her.
