This was a great class for practicing Spanish. Topics were interesting and there was plenty of opportunity to practice. Maria is very mindful about the various levels of language within the class and makes an effort to balance things accordingly.

Maria is a fun professor who would dance Tango in class, or cosplay a nun with her scarf. BUT she is disorganized. Almost at the beginning of every class, she spends 5+ minutes looking for her teaching materials. She also forgets giving everyone exam paper on the exam day. And her spoken Spanish is hard to understand.

Maria is a great teacher and an even better person. She notices when students are not feeling themselves and takes the time to personally make sure things are ok. The class is very enjoyable as it focuses heavily on conversation and thus practical Spanish skills. Though I am one of the weaker Spanish speakers in the class, Maria is still supportive

Maria is a really great person, and I wish I liked this class but at the end of the day this course was a hot mess. To say it was unorganized and confusing would be an understatement. No one knew what was going on. It was like an unanswered riddle; I can't even say for sure what the course was about, or what I got out of it.

Maria is simply an awesome professor. She's hilarious and sweet and makes you want to come to class. If your Spanish is good (especially written Spanish), the class is an easy A. She really cares about her students and wants them to do well. Overall, incredible. Would definitely take again.

This class is supposed to be geared towards students who are not yet fluent in Spanish, but have a basic understanding of the language from high school. Maria is a wonderful person, but it was difficult to do well in this course when there were a few native spanish speakers in the class.

Maria's classes were the highlight of my day. She is so energetic in her presentation of topics. True, she can be a tough grader but she is fair. I highly recommend her classes whether you are a fairly new Spanish learner or someone who is fluent.

Without a doubt, Maria is one of the best profs I have ever had. To do well in her class you must work for it, but by no means is she unfair. She does her best to give each student attention based on their background in Spanish. I enjoyed each class. Enjoyed the readings. Assignment/ test feed back was always constructive and encouraging.

Great teacher! Great class atmosphere! She's a great human being and actually cares for your learning. Class work is manageable and helpful for improving. Lecturas can be tough but we spend time in class understanding and analyzing the text in detail. Participation is key! I have a lot of respect for her and I hope to have other classes with her.

She's actually so funny and this course really helps your conversational skills. It's a pretty easy class and has a light workload and she's really nice and there for you if you need extra help. There's a group project but it's nothing to stress over.

The workload for this course is pretty low and it's not difficult to get a good grade. Maria's somewhat disorganized but she's pretty funny, caring, and really helps you improve your Spanish. She encourages participation and appreciates not just results but effort too. Definitely learned a lot from her.

Honestly, this teacher is hilarious and very, very nice. If you're a problematic student, or one who doesn't take classes seriously, maybe you won't like her. She is a bit disorganized, but she is there to help. I didn't see this "favours native speakers" thing. Group projects. She likes participation. She is beyond sweet.

There are so many good teachers but, there are not enough teachers like Maria. Maria is the teacher you will never forget. She is the most caring, sweet and helpful professor ever. She really takes an interest in her students and helps to the very best of her ability. Goes above and beyond!!! Simply awesome

Great professor. I don't know what the others are talking about, I am not a native speaker and if you give her a good attitude she will love you. Just speak up and try! She's just trying to get everyone to put in an effort. Hilarious too!

She's very unapproachable. Rarely smiles, has a smirk on her face and does favour native speakers. She's very unorganized. I have no idea how she's still teaching in a prestigious school like UBC. She's worthless!

I agree with the last person. She totally favours native speakers which makes it hard for us that actually took the class to learn something. I don't think it's fair that people who can already speak spanish and grew up speaking it can take this class. I had span 202 with her and got an A+ and in 301 I got a B-.

I'm taking her SPAN 302 class right now. Compare to the other professors, she is very bias and are against people that aren't native speakers. I took 301 with another prof last term and I got 80%...but 302...I m struggling. She doesn't provide enough info on the tests and very unprepared for class...
