Avoid. Worst professor. Over complicated concepts doesnt help you doesnt explain anything. Tests are much harder than lecture material. No homework. Just 3 midterms( 20% each) drops lowest one then a final 55%. Horrible run if you have him

Orland is the epitome of "not all smart people are good teachers." Boring lectures and VERY often goes off topic. Literally expects you to teach yourself how to do problems, as there is no classwork whatsoever, leaving little preparation for quizzes (no midterm). Will likely curve your final grade if he sees you're trying but not worth the anxiety.

He is knowledgeable of physics but lectures in a way that is impossible to understand. Problems are all in variables and you have to memorize formulas. Grade is 50% quiz and 50% final. For the final you can bring 6 pages of handwritten notes. You can get a good grade but taking his class with make you feel like you signed up for quantum mechanics.

He's very passionate about physics. However, he doesn't know how to teach it in a way that is understandable to students w little to no prior knowledge. He often overcomplicates concepts and writes problems in terms of variables, which can make things confusing. This was supposed to be an intro-level course, but it definitely doesn't feel like one.

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. HE DOES NOT TEACH GOOD. ALTHOUGH HE DOESNT HAVE A MIDTERM, FOR SOMEONE WHO DOESNT UNDERSTAND PHYSICS OR NEVER TOOK PHYSICS DO NOT TAKE HIM.

If you don't need physics for your major and you just want to take this class to pass your science requirement, DO NOT take Peter Orland's class. Unless you have already taken physics before, this class will be very difficult to understand. He is an extremely intelligent man, but he is not a good professor.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS if you are a bio major, or even taking Physics as a requirement. I am telling you right now, you WILL regret it. His lectures are impossible to understand since he makes them so complex like he's teaching a graduate course. Rude and condescending. Yes, I did well, but almost lost my mind getting through this semester.

Comment:
Doesn't use numbers and makes everything more complicated and complex than it needs to be I took Physics C before and I learned a lot more using numbers for everything than the stuff he teaches Grading is ridiculous, never know what he wants. For ex: On a test, didn't specifically tell us to explain our answer, but takes points of bc we didn't

Entire exams based on lectures that are incoherent. You dont even lern anything and there is no txtbook so you canr even practice. Doesnt tell you what will be on the test and teaches at an extremely high level even though the course is intro physics. Doesnt use numbers for exam questions so nothing makes sense.

He's okay for Physics Lab. Just do experiments and hand in lab reports. If you follow his guidelines for the lab reports, you'll be fine. The toughest part is the journal, which is the procedure of each experiment, but he won't take away too much points if you don't write it well. Always put a period after the objective so you don't lose 2 points.

2 midterms and one final. I have no idea how I got an A- because I did so bad on the midterms, I guess I redeemed my grade w a strong final grade. His exams are 4 questions and the lowest grade is a 4. Never knew that was possible but I guess it is. I HAD to take his class to finish on time but wouldn't recommend his class otherwise.

Don't do it to yourself if you're a bio major. Exam questions are all algebraic and lectures are far from helpful. We asked him numerous times for examples but all he said was do the problems in the book. The problem is that all the questions in the book are numeric and nothing like his exam questions. Take someone else.

Very clear during the labs. Tells you exactly what he wants, word for word. The report must be exactly how he wants it, or don't expect a high grade. Expect to draw lab apparatus and draw exactly how he wants it, or lose points. Super hard grader but very clear with his criteria. Lets you out early if you finish early. He can be insulting to you.

Peter Orland has done a great job teaching the Algebra required to understand the Fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics. I really enjoyed the class and I have learned a lot of Math and Physics. If you want to learn real physics, I strongly suggest you take this class.

This class focuses on Special Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. The class itself is hard, like most physics courses. But if you read the book and do the assignments you will gain understanding of Quantum Physics eventually. Besides, the professor is knowledgeable and very helpful. Except his office hours is very early in the morning.

The class workload is big. You will have to read the book and follow with what is happening with the class. But P. Orland is pretty straight forward and explains a lot. lectures seem sometimes long and contain a LOT of information, but if you follow it will be interesting. I would take the class again.

Very tough teacher. Tests honestly are not that hard unless you are like me and are not naturally good with math and variables. He is a smart guy but never really goes over enough test problem examples in class. 3 tests & many labs. Practice problems, use youtube and online resources and you will be fine. Let me repeat, DO practice problems.
