This was my first online course and I thought it would be a piece of cake since I am a senior in the Honors History program, but I was so wrong. I got low marks for hours of work and emailing the professor and TA rarely helped. Although I ended up learning a lot about a v hot topic in my field, I was constantly anxious I wouldn't pass.

Does not give feedback on writing assignments. Boring "interactive lab" exercises that require you to analyze long documents and then compare and contrast them. It doesn't sound hard, but it is mentally excruciating.

Took this class online. Things you have to know: 1) READ for the quizzes on Moodle. You will not pass the quiz otherwise. 2) No tests 3) tons of writing assignments, they are short but put in effort and MAKE SURE you cite the correct references that he tells you to. He gives explicit instructions. If you're a CHASS major it will not be difficult.

I was offered this class by an adviser last minute. At first he seems kind of intimidating, he's taught for so many years and has traveled so many places, but he is truly interested in his students. Yes there is a lot of writing, but once you figure out how he wants you to right his papers, the class is so easy. Just use lots of quotes!

Dr. Slatta is a decent professor. I was frustrated at the beginning of the year because of his website which you have to use, and his stringent guidlines. Once you find what he is looking for the class is pretty easy. This class has a lot of papers but most are short. He is very knowledgable about Latin America and is pretty interesting. No tests!

Lots of papers!! He's a difficult grader-- you have to write how he wants to get a good grade. There's lots of reading and a class discussion every day. Class is usually boring but he's generally a nice guy overall. Very knowledgeable about Latin America and replies to emails quickly. Be prepared to spend a lot of time writing, but no tests!!

Great teacher, mildly difficult class. It was too easy to pay attention in the class because of how he engaged the students. Really recommend for humanities majors but should be avoided if you are just satisfying a requirement.

Overall he isn't a harsh grader, you just have to know what he expects on assignments (and sometimes it's a lot). Personality sucks--received a couple of emails in which he either slammed me or my classmates and was very condescending. Be ready to constantly hear about how awful the US is and how great every Latin American country is.

Dr. Slatta is great! His class involves a lot of writing but it definitely pays off and he is certainly there to help. He always responded quite quickly to emails!Be sure to ask any questions you have because he does tend to take off for silly, avoidable things like forgetting to staple papers though.

Very fine teacher, the best I had during my MA studies and thesis. Slatta leans left but he follows the evidence. You can respect him even if you disagree with him.

HIST 216 is not an easy class. You have to read, show up and are expected to understand the material. His essays and tests will reflect this big time. The man knows his stuff so you can't bs stuff and expect to pass. Ask him questions, do the readings and you will do fine.

I took this class online. IT IS A TON OF WORK! Lots of writing and reading! NOT an easy class if you don't have hours to dedicate to it, and is very time consuming. Prof. isn't helpful when asking questions, he's more concerned with addressing the subject line to him incorrectly. DON'T RECOMMEND THIS!

Hobbies include: trying to deplete your self-esteem, sending obnoxious replies to e-mails asking him to clarify assignments, and having ridiculous expectations on assignments.

I took his online history class. I asked for help. His response to me was “Whoah! YOUR job to figure these things out ---not mine!!! do your own homework.” (cut and pasted from his original email). His website barely works and all material has the same theme. America’s bad, Castro is good.He gave me a “D” on my final essay. Avoid this professor.

I took the online version of this class and it was hell. The website was terrible help was almost non-existant and feedback was almost impossible to get. I have taken many online classes over many years and this is the worst of the worst. I have never struggled so hard for such a bad grade. Avoid this class like the plague! Take something easier!

Dr. Slatta teaches very well, and demands a great deal of work from his students. The diligent student will profit from his class, however. He obsesses over the use of "passive voice" to the point of fanaticism. He seems to be moody, and sometimes treats students poorly.

Great class, great professor. You will write a of reflections but avoid big projects/tests/papers. Slatta knows his stuff and he's lived enough of it to add some spice too.
