Don't skip his class. LOTS of analytical reading. Grade multiple quizzes/tests/maybe 2 papers. His lectures cover quiz topics and are just important in general for papers+finals. He loses track of himself easily. He can be amusing. Talk to him beforehand about issues & he'll try to be understanding.

Dr. Hock was my rock when i first switched to classics he is a laid back guy but he does have high expectations of his students Reading is important but most important is reading through a analytical lens if you can't get hip to reading in such a way i advise you to withdraw or skip Hocks course but if you aim for Olympus there's a chance

Attendance is not mandatory however it is essential in order to have and idea of what quiz question will be on the next quiz . Quizzes are given during the first 5 minutes of class so it is IMPERATIVE to be on time. Fair grader. Takes grammar spellinggreat writing very seriously. To do well on the final midterm make sure that you read!

Did poorly the entire first half of the class and still did well in the end. GO TO CLASS! The textbook is needed but lectures are even more important. Participation counts; you want him to know your name. Class is easy if you pay attention to lectures, and follow up with the readings. Do well on quizzes and pay attention to themes.

As long as you know how to fluff and you're able to pick up on context clues, this class is a breeze. I never read the books & got an A. Take notes in class- THEY ARE LIFE. Be on time on quiz days. Tests are mostly writing. Take advantage of extra credit. He can be kind of confusing about what he asks for in essays. Overall pretty easy.

Dr. Hock is an intelligent human being, but he is not a good instructor. He simply doesn't care about his students. He only cares about the material discussed in class. If something horrible occurs in your personal life, such as a death; he will not give you a break. Do not take this course unless you truly have a passion for Roman Civilization.

The class if very simple if you take notes in the class. Literally just copy down what he puts on the board and make sure you understand the concept, and you won't even have to read the book for the first half of the course. It's basically an easy A.

The best teacher I had in college. Hands down. I switched to being a Classics major because of his Roman Civ class and Slavery in Antiquities.

Took us to Philly, but only 4 people took advantage of it...Class participation is a must...makes the difference between an A and an F...But the class is fun!!! I love classics!

Dr. Hock is truly amazing. Do not expect an easy A in his class but if you do the readings and participate their is no reason not to get at least a B in the course. He knows his stuff and will inadvertently embarrass you if you dont read so READ. His quizzes are easy but be on time for them (first 5 mins of class) overall hes hella chill and cool.

Sometimes his lectures are interesting, but he is arrogant and thinks he is God?s gift to HU. He has his favorites too. Engaging in classroom discussion helps, he likes classroom discussions. Read the material and show up to class on time because he gives quizzes during the first five minutes of class. (No make ups) His classes are good for Engl

His lectures are really interesting. Not a traditional history class, focus on primary sources. Make sure you read and come to class. Gives weekly quizzes which are fair and essay tests. If you know how analyze writing or you're an english major you'll do really well, he wants you to be able to make inferences from primary texts

A hoot! Always fun to listen to because he brings ancient Roman history to life in the classroom. Mostly primary text-based work, demanding but not impossible to master. Challenge yourself!
