Comment:
Pickering is definitely a great professor and a great lecturer. However he always says "write me something intelligent" for essays and that's pretty much it. He gives extra credit. There're pop quizzes so keep up with reading. If you like rubrics and keeping track of your grade don't take it with him. Like what he says the class is easy to get a B.

Best professor at UConn hands down. He's hilarious yet informative. If you want to know how to write well, Pickering is the guy to learn from. If you're someone who needs a syllabus & clear course outline you might be annoyed by the class-by-class planning, but it's worth it. I never miss class because I'm genuinely interested in what he's saying.

Had him for Short Story. Skeptical at first due to his tendency to ramble- I wasn't sure if it'd be "worth my time." In the end, I genuinely learned quite a bit about life and literature through his rambling. I'd consider myself a better reader, writer, and thinker for having taken his class. HOWEVER, he does not adhere to any kind of a syllabus.

Sam Pickering changed my life. I had him many years ago for several classes. He was the first professor who believed in me... even before I believed in myself.

Sam Pickering is very entertaining! He has been my favorite teacher at UConn so far! Lots of writing (4 page essay each week) but definetly worth it. Beware-- dont read newspapers during class unless you want to be embarassed!!!

Seriously the best prof I've ever had. This guy had me out wandering graveyards at 5 am b/c he'd mentioned a headstone in one of his books. If you want some boring slag, take another course and leave a seat open for someone who's actually going to benefit from him. 100% the bomb.

LOVED Prof. Pickering! Even in a large lecture he managed to connect with and excite students. I don't think sarcasm and challenging people to THINK should be negatives. If you're brave take one of his classes, it's worth it. :)

Just because you have tenure does not mean you degrade and name call students. He did not genuinely care for the students. All he cared about was putting on a show about nothing that was even relevant to the course.

Pickering is honestly my favorite English Professor. If you're an English major, you need to take short story 216 with him. Lecures are amusing...you also get to write your own short story for extra credit.

Sam was the best professor in the English Department. He treated everyone equally, and genuinely cared about all of his students. (Sam was the inspiration for the wonderful teacher in "The Dead Poets Society".)
