One of my favorite professors. Cares about her students & is passionate about what she teaches. Must go to class in order to pass; exams (short response) are based on lectures + assigned readings & she does not podcast. But do not fear - lectures & subject matter are very interesting. For the project, don't be afraid to dance - great experience.

The final includes a dance, otherwise you need to really convince her about an essay topic. Get ready to spending time on weekends learning a dance for a professor's entertainment.

She is incredible, one of the most interesting people I've ever met. She is really fair grading, but doesn't assign a textbook, podcast, or post slides. The only way to learn the info is to go to class. If you show up and listen in class you'll definitely pass!

Teri was one of my favorite professors ever. I took this class as a GE without any previous interest in African art, but I thoroughly enjoyed this class. It's interesting, fascinating, and fun, especially with such an enthusiastic and clear professor. Take this class! The only downside is the pretentious art grad student TAs.

Lots of information to memorize and to throw up on blue books. Grading depends on the TA. I recommend taking notes on a laptop. Looking back at the pictures from her PowerPoint helps(she usually posts them on TED). I sucked on midterm(Africa), and made up for it on final(Oceania). Attendance and participation in discussions is needed.

She is very knowledgeable in the subject matter (African art). Doesn't post images, lecture slides, or podcasts so MUST GO TO CLASS! She is very thorough & explains everything well. Answers all questions! Have to really pay attention in class. Tells you what will be on midterms & final, which are essays.

I absolutely loved this course about West African Art. Dr. Sowell is a great teacher. She really wants you to learn, and not just about art, but about other cultures and world views. Hardly any reading, but you cannot miss lecture. 3 tests, no papers. Take advantage of her office hours. Great for any major.

though i took it as a GE, it required a lot of effort to do well in the class. enthusiastic professor who knows what she's talking about. MUST go to lectures, that's where all the info for the midterms and final comes from. warning: your hand's gonna be in pain after her lectures, a LOT of note-taking.

One of the best professors I've had so far. Her lectures facilitate clear note-taking. She gives you the questions that are gonna be on the midterm and final beforehand. Her papers are short and (if you get Maria as a TA) graded easily. She's passionate about the subject and really easy to talk to. She's inspired me to focus in Pacific Island Art

Get the TA fabian Cereijido he is the best ta in the whole of ucsd. she gives the essay questions to the test just make sure you go to class and take good notes and somewhat memmorize the answers. she speaks super fast but its important to take good notes. Gives 1 big essay and 2 small ALL GRADING DEPENDS ON THE TA. Get Fabian the TA no matterWHAT

I actually thought she was sort of annoying. Although I did appreciate her passion for the subject, her lectures were impossible to follow, and she had a tendency to go on long rants. Note-taking was a nightmare. TAs were nit-picky and graded on technicalities. At least her tests aren't too bad...she does give you the questions beforehand.

I loved this course! Sowell is one of the best prof. I've had. Exams are easy because she gives you the questions ahead of time so you can prepare them. Lectures are mandatory though, if you miss one you will be lost for some of the questions she asks. Some of the TA's for the course are a bit unhelpful though.

Teri is a really great lecturer. She's incredibly smart and funny, and she explains things in a very easy-to-understand way. I felt that she really wanted her students to do well. She deliberately had no textbook to SAVE US MONEY, not to make it harder to study. Lecture notes are offered by A.S., so there's no need to attend every single class.

Had her for VIS 126 (both Oceanic & African) and for VIS 21, would not take her again. I love her passion but she talks too fast and requires too much. Her style was fine for the upper division, but for VIS 21 I think she expects too much from Freshpersons that are, for the most part, not even interested in art history.

Take this class if you need it for a GE. She really cares about you and the subject, you have to go to all of the lectures because she tells you everything you need to know for the midterm and final. (final is not accumulative). She gives you all the questions way before hand.

terrible lecture organization. makes it seem like every culture she discusses is incredibly noble and dignified in everything they do. criticizes/blames "western thinking/perspective" in almost every lecture. but TA is good, class is easy. teri=irritating beyond belief
