Comment:
If you struggle with math, try to find a different professor. Dr. Lu is difficult to understand and the homework is often much more difficult than anything you will do in class. The tests are easy because the questions are often based off of problems you do in class. He is very generous with giving extra credit opportunities if a test goes badly.

Very kind and cares about his students. As others have said, he has an accent, but his English is very good. He's a bit of a tough grader, however, sometimes he lets the class get extra credit by redoing work. It's a very tough class in general as it is "Calculus." If you work very hard on learning the material, hopefully you can get a B or a C.

This was a tough class, but I enjoyed taking it with Dr. Lu! He's a kind man & is accessible and helpful during office hours. In his lectures he focuses both on teaching concepts & working examples, and this helped me a lot with understanding the material. There are 2 tests, which form a large portion of the grade, and homeworks due every 2 weeks.

Least favorite prof so far at UNCW. Online homework was way harder than the tests. Would rarely answer questions nicely. Attendance is very important. Never responds to emails & does not remember things you tell him in person, so he's hard to work with outside of class. If you don't feel 100% confident in your algebra skills, find another professor

*I previously took AP Calc in high school & got a 4 on the exam. I also love Calc* Bit of an accent, but tries to explain things really well & discusses some previous material the first week or so. No formula sheets for tests or quizzes. Homework was between the average & above average amount.

He bases notes off of textbook. Good professor but moves swiftly. Assumes you know basic algebra and trig (which i did but some did not). Know these skills and it is not too hard. Easy grader compared to other math teacher, always willing to help students. Just his teaching style (textbook based ppts) can be hard for some. Super easy quizzes.

Difficult to understand and follow. Skips over steps and assumes you already understand the material.

Accent takes a few classes to get used to but after that there are no problems. Homework isn't bad and tests were really easy. Granted I did study a lot but even so the class was pretty easy.

He is slow at times, but makes sure all the information is taught that is on the tests. Gives plenty of review for the tests, and the test questions reflect his lecture and the homework. Great calculus teacher. Is willing to help outside of the classroom; you just have to ask.

Probably one of the best if not the best teacher you can have for Calc 161 based on my experience and what I have heard from others. He has a small accent but you get used to it very quickly. Dr. Lu is a very caring man and he is also funny. Exams are way easier than the HW problems, if you are confused on something just use "KhanAcademy". Easy A

He is so nice and really cares about his students. He does everything that he can to make sure that his students are doing well, so he often gives extra credit on tests if he can see effort is being put in. He also gives extra credit when only a few students show up to class, so make sure you always go. His tests are easier than practice problems.

Dr. Lu is nice as a person, but his teaching style is terrible. I personally find it very hard to learn calculus based off of a powerpoint made by the textbook manufacturer. He just reads the information on the powerpoint and expects you to apply it to problems that he doesn't do in class. I would take a different professor if possible.

If you're good at math, you'll be fine. Otherwise you'll be spending lots of time in the math lab. He's kind of hard to understand at times due to his accent. He definitely wants you to pass and will be glad to help out as much as he can. He has reviews before the test, but he skips a lot of steps and just assumes you know what you are doing.

I took his Calc 1 class over the summer and in 5 weeks I felt like I understood calculus more than any other math class I took at my home college. Including college algebra! He breaks down the concepts into great detail and was a very fair grader. Such a sweet guy!

Very kind but not the best professor. Tends to lecture for long periods of time without incorporating examples so it's easy to get lost. Skips a lot of algebraic steps when working out problems so his solutions can be confusing. Tests are pretty straight forward.

If you are great at math, I think Dr. Lu is a good choice. If you are the other 99.9% of the population, try a different professor. Although he seems nice and occasionally comical, he is a horrible teacher. He expects you to be on his level and never ask for help, he tells you your problem is worse than he handles to find help elsewhere.

Dr. Lu was a fantastic calc teacher. Of all the teachers I've had in math, he was definitely my favorite. He makes it easy for you to get an A, and he's such a sweet and helpful man. I definitely recommend him!

Dr. Lu is a fairly nice man, but he isn't the best teacher. He is hard to understand and is not helpful at all. His test are extremely difficult and have nothing to do with the notes from class. I would not recommend this class.

Dr. Lu is a fair teacher. He is funny sometimes, too. But you will not be able to understand a word he says. Get weekly tutoring, is my advice. I will not take another class of his. I am in MAT 111 now, and I took a test yesterday that made me cry. Still trying to figure out if its because I'm stupid or his test was extremely hard...
