Dr. Mayfield exemplifies everything that is wrong with education. She''s completely out of touch with reality -- which would tolerable if her detachment was based on idealism. Unfortunately she simply exists in a world where she puts forth minimal effort provides little guidance and grades based on strict self-aggrandized standards..

I used to love the subject material before this class. Mayfield assigned a tremendous amount of work with almost zero instruction. I thought she wanted us to be independent -- but she grades pedantically. If you want to score a 70% on an 8 page paper because you didn't cite one source correctly, Mayfield is the professor for you.

I did more writing in this class than I have ever done for any math class before. I did not like that we used an online textbook or a math software program called Maple. She would also make simple math problems more complicated than they had to be.

Comment:

One of the worst classes in the mathematics department. Could not be more disappointed. Its all presentations and busy work. She did not TEACH at all. This class should be removed. Unfair to students. Doesnt communicate well. Thinks this is the only class that exist. Great person, not so great professor.

This course does have a lot of mandatory busy work, but if it wasn't for that, I probably wouldn't know the information as well. But if you don't understand something and ask her for help, she is always super helpful! The only people I know who hate her also despise Calculus.

She is great! People do not understand that problem is usually in them, and not in teachers. Yes, Dr. Mayfield is hard, but if you are persistent you will learn a lot. She was very helpful, and was one of teachers that helped me choose my life path.

This teacher is the WORST in the math department. She has made me hate math. She assigns an over-whelming amount of homework which is really just busy-work. I learned nothing in this class. I can't believe Mayfield is a math teacher! She comes across so illogically!

the prior comment about her grading tough is accurate, but she is fair. if you find yourself taking one of her classes be prepared to work hard. i have always found her very helpful and very willing to work with you, as long as you take the initiative. she's a tough teacher, but a very good one.

She is a bad teacher. She will give a test without handing back homework. Her test rarely reflect what is being covered in class. She only cares about a student if he or she is gifted at math. Her most common answer when some one asks her for help "check the book" Try to avoid her at all costs or you may start hating math.

Not as bad as all these people seem to think. Always helped me with any problems, academic or otherwise. Calc 3 was a ****, but that's how it would be no matter who taught. And learning to write all those papers will really help you kids out in the long run.

She is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Her classes are very tough though. You will work very hard especially if you are taking a calculus course with her. I have found her to be very helpful with assignments as long as you are not looking for answers before you turn it in.

Unbelievable amount of homework that counts for a third of the final grade. Most of the class is self-descovery: nothing is explaind, have to find out for ourselves using some computer software. Very nice person though.
