If you are not going to put in the work do not expect a good grade. Participation is mandatory and if you're late don't bother coming. You may have to practice outside of class before exams but there are only 2 or 3. This class is very useful and it can be fun if you find someone in the class to pair up with. No homework assigned.

Teacher would be a bad word for him, he is rude to students and does not teach a single thing. He is just like here is a bow, shoot it. Avoid this teacher at all costs, just a mean person all around. He does not care for students what so ever.

Prof. Hartwig knows his stuff, he'll teach you how to defend yourself, some are obvious and some aren't, overall he's legit. TIP: get a partner or a group that is serious enough about the class to practice sparring throughout the quarter(s), it will be fun and help you learn. Final's exam will be determined by the class participation. GL&Have Fun!!

Brent was a great instructor! I really enjoyed learning karate from him. We did kicks and punches, katas, and partner drills. He asked us what we wanted to do towards the end of the quarter, and was happy to demonstrate techniques if we did not understand. You could only miss 3 classes to get an A, but as long as you come and participate, easy A!

Okay i have never withdrew from a class let alone a class i wanted to join for myself. I have always wanted to take a self defense class, so i decided to enroll into one outside of my major at Bellevue college. He was awful, it was more like martial arts then self defense we spent most the class stretching. NEVER WILL TAKE HIM AGAIN AND HE WAS RUDE

he's literally the worst teacher I have EVER signed up for, DO NOT take him unless you are ready to GRIND. he's very monotone and makes it so hard to reach him in or outside of class. tbh his grading is more tough than my math and science classes.

The stuff that we have learned in Self Defense is really helpful for real world situations. However, he takes himself and his warmups and everything else very seriously, and if you aren't doing it at the same intensity you aren't doing it right. Final grade is based on attendance and an evaluations at the end of the quarter.

I really dislike Brent. He's got a monotone that makes it sound like he's always talking down to you, & there isn't much room for error in missing classes. If you miss more than 4 during the quarter, you fail. Other than that, the class is okay, as it's really just showing up & playing badminton for 50 minutes. Class, it's okay. Teacher, not great.

Hartwig's badminton class was fun. He is very chill and you must only show up and participate to get an A. More than 1 day of absence lowers your grade so don't think to skip this class.

Self defense was pretty boring. The beginning was interesting and fun, I made friends in the class so ground fighting was fun, but after awhile, we ended up doing the same thing every class. Brent has little patience for people, which makes him a poor teacher. He gets frustrated by talking easily. No final, was there every day and only got a Pass.

In Self Defense class Hartwig tells students in the beginning of class that there are several options for the final. If he decides on the 100 point final, almost all is lost. Unless you have 1-2 hours of extra practice after every class, it is not worth the effort to take the optional final. 90100 is an A. You will receive a Pass grade otherwise.

Self-Defense was really hard - not only physically but mentally. A lot of work - no slacking off. Fun when you're on top of things but if you fall behind - good luck.

Final is absolutely not fair! I was there every day, but because I didn't know I had two options for final, he gave me the hardest one! I strongly felt I should have gotten an A, but for his afoul clarity and ignorance for making the options available to everyone I only got a Pass; like those who didn't take the final!

Does not cover things like how to walk to your car. How to be aware of your surroundings. He also doesn't teach how to strike properly. Doesn't he make sure anyone is doing it right. Worst self defense class I've ever taken. He expects you to participate injured, sick or not. Very disappointing class. Lots of kids came out turned to martial arts.

Very easy badminton class. just show up and play, don;t sit around twiddling your thumbs. very easy A, if you shopw up everyday you can play a game while he watches and there you go. if you miss class you can make up one or two and take an easy skills test. would like to take again, it was a lot of fun but doesnt fit into schedule :|
