I took several of Ryskamp's courses back in 1998 - 2000 and worked as his RA. Ryskamp was articulate, tough, and demanded high skill from our work. I then spent 20+ years researching and teaching my own courses, and now I'm a PhD student for machine learning. Ryskamp prepared me very well for my professional and research career. Thank you, George!!

I have taken 4 of his classes and was his T.A. for History 218. He is very skilled and knowledgable about Family History, especially Spanish. His classes usually consist of a powerpoint lecture. He is a lenient grader, and as long as you do what is required, you can get an A. Because of his health, he can get behind and disorganized, but it's okay.

His classes are very long and powerpoints are outdated. He was a very respected professor but now it is hard to keep up with what he is trying to say. We have to bring up homework assignments in class to make sure we understand them and what he wants on our reports. It is honestly a 6 credit hour class with the amount of work he leaves.

Comment:
He has a class load that is equivalent to a 5-6 credit class. You will spend a lot of time doing his assignments. Fortunately he grades pretty lightly. He is also quite unorganized which is probably why he gets quite behind on his grading. His lectures are boring and relies heavily on his powerpoints that have loads of slides.

Comment:
A lot of papers that are not clearly defined at first. It takes a lot of explaining from TA and asking questions to find out what he really wants us to learn. Help from the TA is essential to pass this class.

You are expected to take notes in class. Attendance is not required but it is vital to your understanding of the course material. He is very personable and is more than willing to help and answer questions. Reading the book helps a little, but you go over everything in class. Just make sure you go to class and take notes, and you should be all set.

So much was expected, but so little taught. I was extremely frustrated. Thousands of pages were assigned for reading, but one question would be asked from all of that. If you can, avoid him at all costs.

He will ask you to complete assignments about things he barely taught in class. The test is hard because he will ask you things that were not covered in class.

Don't buy the book, we never used it. And if you are expecting he will give you feedback on your assignments, forget about it. He will never reply back to your emails if you ask him a question about an assignment. Good class, kinda easy to get an A, but did not fulfill my expectations.

Brother Ryskamp is a good person, very flexible with deadlines and homework. He would give you extra time to complete your assignments if you need it. However, it is too much work for one credit class. He tries to teach you how to do your family history through PP Presentation which was not helpful at all. He will ask you to complete assignments ab

Awwwwwesome! One of the most helpful and caring professors on campus. He actually prays for his students every night. But he isn't easy. You will stretch and learn, but that is why we are here anyway. Loved him so much I took another class from him this semester. HIGHLY recommended.

I was pretty bored in this class. I was disappointed because he used powerpoints that another teacher made for another class I took this semester, so I had the same lectures twice in one day. Sometimes he can be scatterbrained, but he's a nice guy and helpful.

This is a hard class, worth 1 credit but you have to put in at least 30 hours of research for an A. However, Ryskamp is a great teacher and this is one of the most eternally helpful you can take here on campus. Listen to the General Authorities when they say do your family history! I recommend!
