Comment:

Doc was the BEST PROFESSOR at CI! I just graduated but the campus misses him sooo much since he retired. His class, hands down, was my favorite. He was tough as a teacher but so well respected and inspirational. Like so many who have mentioned here, Docs class was so much more than a regular class. He has changed our lives for the good, forever.

Comment:

Doc's class is life changing. Service learning, 4 speeches, and a tournament but it is all worth it. No exams and textbook is not used. If you are truly serious about becoming a speaker take this class. You will not regret it. It is really life changing I can't explain it, take the class and you'll know exactly what I mean.

Doc's class is life changing. Staying late and working your butt off is to be expected, but you will not regret it. Even if you hate public speaking, this will become your favorite class ever. I learned so much and gained so many close friends. I would take this class again in a heartbeat.

Doc is an amazing person and professor. Probably the hardest I've ever worked/stressed over a class but SOO worth it .However , I would only take this class if you have an easy load as far as your other classes. This class will take up A LOT of time but you will Come out a good public speaker.

I don't know what people are talking about when they say the class is hard. If you do the work, you're going to do well. When he says practice 50 times, he means it, so don't take it lightly. There is a service learning component, but that's not hard either. Great professor!

Hands down, the best thing I have ever done for myself. There's no contest: If you want to be a public speaker, you take his class. He can be stubborn about what he wants, but he will never ever force you to mold to his ideas. Tips: Do not buy the book, and there is a service learning component, but it's easy.

Doc's class is the ultimate challenge. He makes you work harder than you ever had in a class but at the end of the semester you have become the best speaker you could possibly be! I worked all semester to hear Doc say that I have become an improved speaker. Doc told me how proud he was of me and how far I have come! I feel great!

This was my absolute favorite class. It was the most difficult, time consuming, terrifying, amazing and rewarding one I've ever taken. He assigns 4 speeches, and at the end of the semester, you have to participate in a speech tournament, and you give each speech four times. If you put in the effort, you WILL get amazing results guaranteed.

Doc lets you know that it's going to be a hard class from the first day, he even gives you an opportunity to leave half way through. But sticking with it will lead to you making some great friends and improving yourself massively. Well worth the difficulty.

He lets you know right from the off that his class is not easy, but sticking with it is well worth the work. He makes the class an experience that not only gives you useful skills, but encourages bonding with your peers. He's incredibly insightful and always willing to help you, even long into the night, if you're willing to work.

Make sure to manage your time well. And I know as hard it is, make sure you go on the first day he offers a speech. it makes your life much easier to get it out of the way becausee you never know what is going to come up the next and chances are you will leave it till the night before. Go in for help he can make your speech 10 times better

Great class! Doc intimidates you on the first day with the class objectives but the class itself is not difficult. If you put the effort in you will get atleast a B. This class really makes you a better speaker and the tournament at the end is easy and kind of fun. He is a great professor that really loves what he does and wants to help you improve

Me day 1: shy, complete opposite of a speaker, scared crapless, terrified, how will I survive? Me end of semester: confident, public-speaking woman. I've never taken a class so horrifying, frustrating, time-consuming, difficult, yet SATISFYING and absolutely wonderful in my life. Dr. Sawyer will change you. I DARE you to try him on for size.

WAY too much work for an entry level class. Sure he's great...if you wana stay 3 hours after class (he will make u stay), go to an all day mandatory speech tournament on a saturday, and write 12-13 speeches in one semester.
