This class was phenomenal. All the disadvantaged souls who complain that this course is about philosophy rather than psychology don't understand that the purpose of this class is to expose the philosophical assumptions and biases behind all psychological theories and question the reality of those theories. Amazing course.

Dr. Slife is brilliant and a very kind person. However, this class was more of a philosophy class than a class about personality. It was more like an in-depth version of history of psych. I enjoyed history of psych, so I enjoyed this class. If that's not your thing, take it from someone else.

I'm pretty sure Slife just threw out the course outline for 341 and made up his own plan, and it did not turn out well. This is a philosophy class, not a psychology class. If you want to learn about personality, take from someone else. Must go to class to know what the heck is going on. On the other hand - Slife is super nice and very smart.

Slife is a super nice guy and I would recommend getting to know him as a professor. However this was my LEAST favorite psych class and I would never take it again from him!! Take from someone else! Lectures are long, confusing, and boring. He posts nothing on learning suite and the only assignments are papers...

Dr. Slife is really smart and he is more than willing to answer questions. BUT this course is pure philosophy. I was confused throughout a lot of it and found the papers pretty hard. If you hate philosophy, DON'T take this class!

Comment:
Dr. Slife is an amazing professor and therapist, and the lectures are always fascinating, but i would not recommend taking Personality from him. The class was way over-the-top in time theories, etc. that do TECHNICALLY apply to personality, but it's so abstract that it shouldn't even count as a personality class! So interesting, but not practical.

Comment:
This is a philosophy course. Class is all explanations of philosophy and the papers are on philosophy in psychology. It's fascinating if you're in the right sort of mindset. Dr. Slife is very smart and cares a lot. He knows his stuff. No tests, only papers. Not too hard, but don't take it unless you are really into philosophy over application.

Best Professor I have ever had! His class was incredible and life changing. It's difficult not to come out of his class a better person or having a serious desire to become a better person. He truly exemplifies what it means to be a disciple of Christ. He helped strengthen my testimony in many ways. I feel honored to have had him as a professor.

Dr. Slife knows his stuff. This class changed the way that I think. It is really easy to get an A in this class if you do all of the readings and work with the TA on your papers. You just need to do a two page paper every two weeks and there are no tests in this class. Take this class!

Gained many insights from this class. I would recommend this class to anybody! You'll need to read a lot and use critical thinking all the time but it's worth it!. No other class has offered such postmodern approach to the field of psychology and its theoretical basis... Loved it!

Great teacher and very interesting class material. The concepts can be hard to grasp at the beginning but Slife is very patient and great at explaining. A good amount of reading required with weekly quizzes on it but tests are based on the lectures. Attendance not required but may be necessary to understand the material. Great class and teacher!

Great class, discussions were very interesting, and I felt like it genuinely changed the way I think. The concepts are revolutionary, as Slife is the leading expert in the entire field on the subject. However, the writing was graded to the point where it was very difficult to get an A on anything, which I didn't necessarily agree with.

Slife's personality class is the best psychology class I've taken here at BYU. I learned so much and he made the subject matter so interesting. It was cool getting a non LDS perspective while still bringing God into the discussion. He takes you way more in depth into the theoretical backgrounds of psychology than any other class I've ever had.

My suggestion to students who want to do well in this class and who really want to enjoy professor Slife is to take his classes your senior year. By this time you should know how to cut corners which should make the readings doable. You will also likely be more mature and thus more appreciative for what Slife has to offer. Slife=Wisdom&Genius

I read all the comments on here before taking this class, so obviously I had really high expectations going into it. He's a good professor, but in my opinion he's definitely not the best professor I have ever had at BYU, nor is he the best Psychology professor I have had at BYU. His lectures can be hard to follow and the reading is rather tedious.

One of the best psych classes i've ever taken. Dr. Slife is an amazing teacher. Tons of reading, lectures is where you learn the most. I don't think i missed one lecture because he makes you think deep! Take it from him. Let me tell you it's not easy and his exams are highly stressful studying for. I still recommend him!
