I was one of Gary's first-ever college students when he was hired to head the art department at Kilgore College back in 1978. He "clicked" with the students immediately and his classes seemed to be about five minutes long. We enjoyed the classes and barely realized we were learning. Comment:

Quite possibly the best art teacher that ever lived. He maintains the perfect balance of hammering home the important concepts while encouraging and inspiring growth. If that isn't enough, his sense of humor and sarcastic stories will have you recommending him to friends.

The best professor I had my 1st semester. I can say I've greatly improved under Frields' instruction and have grown to appreciate drawing & charcoal. He gives knowledge of both art and life! You aren't required to know fancy definitions or anything, he's straight to the point. Plays awesome music. Has a really fun sense of humor & down to earth.

He is a wonder teacher. He will really help you improve your drawing skills. He is easy to understand, funny, very nice, and all over enjoyable class. There is very little busy work and all he really focuses on is helping you learn to draw and less about grades. He is easy to approach about questions. Only thing hard is keeping up with sketch books

gary is amazing! i learned so much more than drawing in his class. he is super funny and interesting no matter what day you catch him on. he helps you even when you're not taking his classes. so TAKE HIM! you'll really get your money's worth with this character.

amazing person... knows so much valuable information. i currently have him for an 8 am drawing 2 class, and was surprised by how much motivation he gives me to wake up and get to class (ON TIME). i recommend taking him again and again, he's got so much to say, and is very goofy to level out his seriousness. if you want to better yourself take him!

Not only did Frields completely change my views on art, he also helped change my views on life. Always ready to help and go the extra mile for all students. Honest about work, but not harsh, brilliant about artists, knows contemporary art and how to relate it to the students' work better than anyone I know.

amazing teacher. i wasnt too sure about him when i first took his class, but after the first semester i was hooked. any class he teaches, im taking. a true riot, makes you want to learn. he wants you to succeed and will help you get to that point. if you can, take him and you wont regret. hes a teacher youll never forget the rest of your life.

Figure drawing with Frields is the best way to take it. He doesn't concentrate so much on the figure as the end product, but as the means to the end product - meaning he helps you discover your own aesthetic using the figure as a tool. And he keeps the class lively with stories about werewolves, Elvis & UFO abductions (all completely relevant).

Mr. Frields is an excellent drawing teacher. When I first went into the class, I didn't know anything about drawing, but now I'm very confident in the drawings that I produce. He's a very helpful teacher, and is very willing to sit down and explain "how to see" everything you're drawing. Highly recommended.
