Comment:

This man has no clear plan or schedule for this class, he seems to just ramble on in lecture. Likewise, he is very stern and at times downright rude, yelling at students for going to the bathroom or demanding the whole class close their laptops because he sees one student not paying attention. Tests are fairly difficult, not as easy as you'd expect

Comment:

Very poor at communicating what he wants students to know. Very inflexible and at times unfair with grading. He also spent 80% of the semester before 1950, when so many major developments in popular music happened after then. We didn't even cover any material past 1970, which I find utterly ridiculous and disappointing.

DO NOT TAKE HIM. This class is impossible. He rambles on constantly repeating himself and you never actually learn anything in class even though attendance is mandatory. Probably only 3 people in the whole class are even listening to him. Oh and don't use the bathroom because he will go crazy and start swearing at you

Comment:

Very different from his TIDES class. He knows his stuff, and he is very interesting to listen to in class. He's hilarious too! His tests can be difficult and many people fail, but that's only because they don't study. Start memorizing music early and you'll be PERFECTLY fine. Study his study guide as well and you'll be fine and get a good grade!

Joyce is probably one of the toughest graders I've ever had. His final was the easiest out of the tests. He yells a lot and becomes very distracting. I do not recommend taking his class.

Joyce is an interesting professor and definitely loves what he's teaching, but he's a bit out of it. He never exactly knows whats going on or that kids are literally all zoned out during class. Easy to get an A because he will sometimes give out the answers.. but the test formats are strange and you can never know what to expect on them.

Great teacher; well studied AND experienced. cares about students' well-being, goes out of his way to help out of class. A wealth of knowledge and kind hearted, easy going. His notes superior to the Norton textbook at times. You definitely leave the class thoroughly knowledgeable, as his exams demand.

This class was disappointing. Joyce is very knowledgeable and makes lectures entertaining. But he kept going over the same material over and over again. By the end of the semester, we had only made it up to the 1950s. Prof. Joyce is entertaining and the class is easy but you don't really learn that much. He's also crazy.

sure, he's a little crazy, but he's absolutely brilliant, and endlessly knowledgeable--not just about his field and his specialties, but about everything. he has played with ella fitzgerald, and he has toured the world as a jazz drummer, so of course he's a little cooky. but he's very interested in helping you if you show the slightest effort

Hilarious guy, but a major jerk at that. He's got a ton of great stories to tell - used to play jazz in strip clubs. Very knowledgeable in the subject. Exam/quiz are completely unpredictable (got B+) - great class, but as someone suggested take it Pass/Fail.

Prof. Joyce knows music. He pounds rhythmically on podiums, dances, and sings in class. However, tests are poorly-constructed and seem rushed...i.e. totally bogus, intentionally misleading multiple choice/true/false questions that are there just to trip you up. I know jazz and am a musician, and I got a B. Decent course on jazz history.

Interesting subject matter with an even more interesting professor. Attendance counts, tests can be random but he will help out with study guides. FOCUS on the audio sections of the tests- they are the most difficult.

prof joyce is a funny man, but as a TIDES professor he was completely disappointing but he was very lax with due dates and although he was repetitive in class, he was always funny and interesting

Comment:

Music and Culture of New Orleans is such a great TIDES class. Joyce is hilarious and extremely passionate about the subject matter. He knows a lot about New Orleans history and tons about music. If you can sit and talk to him, get to know him! He's a very interesting guy. Also, on the field trip to rock and bowl he'll buy you drinks at the bar!

What a great class! Joyce is one of the best lecturers I've ever encountered. His class is so interesting and requires very little work. Go to the review sessions and he'll tell you exactly what you need to know for the exam. Very nice to talk to. Tests are not difficult and there are only 3.

Avoid this professor. His exams are difficult simply because he is completely unaproachable. I was shouted at for 20 minutes for asking him a question about the exam. He refused to let me see him during office hours, and told me that answering questions about the exam was "not his job". I wouldn't take a class with him even if he guaranteed an A.

Joyce is someone they let out of an asylum. Hes a whack, but not a bad teacher. Loves to drop the f-bomb. Class is clear, dont have to pay attention to much, but you have to study for the exams, especially the final. All around i learned alot. Also, if you are a girl and your hot you will have a breeze of a time, just make sure you talk to him
